Failure of F240 (PN CSSD-F240GB2)

Hi

 

The above drive has today developed a problem. It fails to be recognised by my laptop's BIOS and by my USB caddy. The laptop is fine (running with my slow, old spinner right now). In the past, the drive has failed to be recognised at boot time every once in a while (1 in 10 boots), but retrying has always fixed it and I assumed it was a minor incompatibility.

 

Today it appears to have failed completely. I have followed the instructions on the support site and have been directed to apply for an RMA.

 

However, the data on the drive is not backed-up and is critical to me. I'm self-employed and there's six weeks work on it. If I send the drive back under RMA, what are the chances of preserving the data? I.e. are SSDs ever repaired, or are they always simply replaced? I really REALLY need the data.

If you RMA the drive there is zero chance of preserving the data. If you need to restore or backup files you have to do that yourself or go to a professional data recovery service.

 

The RMA service may secure erase the drive, give you a refurbished drive, or a new drive.

Thanks for your reply. Not the answer I was hoping for, though...

 

Because the drive isn't recognised by the computer -- and as the computer is OK and used to recognise it, I assume no ordinary computer will recognise it -- I guess the issue is with the drive's internal power or front-end electronics. The problem occurred at power off/on. The data on the flash, including the physical mapping, may be OK.

 

Do Corsair offer any kind of data recovery service on their products?

After passing the drive to a local, reputable data recovery company, they have failed to retrieve the data. They say that the drive "comes ready", then when they try to access the data, the drive goes into the "busy" state and stays there until reset.

 

Is there a planned firmware update for this drive, and if so is there even the remotest chance of it helping me? Can I even upgrade the firmware with the drive in a USB caddy?

 

Does Corsair have any relationships with data recovery companies? If not, do you have any personal experience with SSD specialists? (I.e. what would you do if you were in my position?)

There's 2 firmware updates for your SSD, links are on the left. However since your drives aren't recognized, no firmware update would help you out.
