BRADY_D79
Hi there, I recently got a ram upgrade for Christmas: 16GB 2 x 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 1600 MHz 11-11-11-30 1.35V (Part no. CMSA16GX3M2A1600C11) and when I installed it in my Macbook Pro (mid 2012), the laptop refused to boot up...at first, it wouldn't leave the apple screen, then when I forced a shutdown and reinstalled the two sticks, I got the apple screen, followed by a bunch of jibberish writing with a black background running through the screen. I don't understand, is this not compatible with my Macbook?? The package says "MACMEMORY" next to the Mac logo and specifically says that it's compatible with a Macbook Pro with Intel i7...my stock ram is 4GB of DDR3 1600MHz, so this should theoretically work perfectly fine, right? Can anybody tell me why it doesn't?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 8, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 8, 2013 Have you tried to reset the PRAM and test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org?
BRADY_D79
I'm sorry, this might sound like a dumb question, but how do I run an app to test the RAM if I can't even boot up my computer with it installed?
BRADY_D79
Ok nevermind, I figured how to do the memtest in single user mode and it immediately shut my computer down with a kernel panic and gave me the following error report once I restarted with my stock RAM in: Interval Since Last Panic Report: 118623 sec Panics Since Last Report: 1 Anonymous UUID: 637CF380-0AA5-5DCE-9C36-75032F22CFEE Sat Feb 9 00:32:10 2013 panic(cpu 4 caller 0xffffff802a0b7e75): Kernel trap at 0xffffff802a087d82, type 13=general protection, registers: CR0: 0x0000000080010033, CR2: 0x000000010003bd20, CR3: 0x000000002733e005, CR4: 0x00000000001606e0 RAX: 0x00ffff802f8ce060, RBX: 0x0000000000000013, RCX: 0xffffff802a6bcd50, RDX: 0x0000000000000013 RSP: 0xffffff81fa53bb00, RBP: 0xffffff81fa53bb20, RSI: 0xffffff802f8cbc60, RDI: 0xffffff802a6bcd50 R8: 0xffffff804a3853a8, R9: 0xffffff804a38caf8, R10: 0xffffff802a6bcc20, R11: 0x0000000000000206 R12: 0x0000000040000800, R13: 0xffffff804b50cfc0, R14: 0x00000000000000ec, R15: 0xffffff804a38caf8 RFL: 0x0000000000010286, RIP: 0xffffff802a087d82, CS: 0x0000000000000008, SS: 0x0000000000000010 Fault CR2: 0x000000010003bd20, Error code: 0x0000000000000000, Fault CPU: 0x4 Backtrace (CPU 4), Frame : Return Address 0xffffff81fa53b7a0 : 0xffffff802a01d626 0xffffff81fa53b810 : 0xffffff802a0b7e75 0xffffff81fa53b9e0 : 0xffffff802a0cd3bd 0xffffff81fa53ba00 : 0xffffff802a087d82 0xffffff81fa53bb20 : 0xffffff802a088795 0xffffff81fa53bb50 : 0xffffff802a062892 0xffffff81fa53bce0 : 0xffffff802a06370d 0xffffff81fa53bda0 : 0xffffff802a069aa0 0xffffff81fa53bf00 : 0xffffff802a068648 0xffffff81fa53bf20 : 0xffffff802a35b202 0xffffff81fa53bf50 : 0xffffff802a3e060a 0xffffff81fa53bfb0 : 0xffffff802a0cdc03 BSD process name corresponding to current thread: memtest Boot args: -s -v Mac OS version: 12C3006 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 12.2.1: Thu Oct 18 16:32:48 PDT 2012; Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 11, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 11, 2013 I am sorry but that only tells me a there is a problem, so let me rephrase what I said. Please install just one of the modules with no other memory installed them reset the PRAM. Directions to reset the PRAM should be in the user manual or search for it using Google or call Apple Tech support. Then use another system to down load the ISO Image of the latest version of http://www.memtest.org then when it boots the first time after the Pram reset you would hit the hot Key to boot from CD and boot right from the memtest CD. Memtest will boot to out side of the Mac O.S.
