Unable to boot with XMP CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 on Asus z170 pro gaming MB

Recommended Posts

I was able to use manual settings to get it to clock at 3200 but I had to push the voltage to 1.36 and only after I reverted to BIOS 0803

It now boots reliably. Only took about 3 hours of testing various settings on various bios versions.

Hi guys, got a small update from Asus. Sounds like they are also seeing this XMP 3000/3200 problem . I was informed that they have just released a BIOS update for Maximus VIII boards to address this issue: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/MAXIMUS_VIII_HERO/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO-ASUS-1202.zip

Please let us know if that fixes the problem.

Still pending on Z170-A and Pro. I'll share info with you guys as they come along.

So 1202 has been out since 2015/11/13

https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO/HelpDesk_Download/

I'm wary of trying it as the 1002 caused me issues and it took ages to settle the thing down and get it all working ok!!!

If someone tries let me know!

Any of the Maximus VIII owners have any success with that 1202 BIOS? Please let me know as I need to let Asus know if these issues are getting resolved or not so they can investigate further from their side.

Another update from Asus. For Z170 Pro board, they've suggested to use BIOS 1102 http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/Z170-PRO-GAMING/Z170-PRO-GAMING-ASUS-1102.zip. According to them, they've included the fix in that BIOS to address this issue.

Also, Z170-A owners that have this issue should try BIOS 1302 http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/Z170-A/Z170-A-ASUS-1302.zip and see if the problem will get fixed.

Again, thank you guys for your patience on this matter. We are in constant communication with Asus to make sure that we're providing you guys factual information with regards to this issue. So please provide me some feedback if these suggested BIOS are actually solving this issue or not, that way they know what's going on in the field.

1102 bios has been running for a few days now.

3200 XMP Profile is a disaster, yeah it will boot now with a bit of extra voltage to the memory at like 1.355 or 1.360 but windows will just bluescreen on boot, default voltage of 1.350 is a no go on post, to be honest even with the extra voltage post is like 50/50 with XMP on.

if i bypass the the XMP Profile and get the motherboard to set the speed at 3200 it wont boot but 3100 will boot into windows fine, CPU-Z tells me the motherboard has set the memory up at 1558 MHz 17-18-18-36, the 3200 XMP profile should be 1600 MHz 16-18-18-36.

had it running at 3000 for a couple of days prior to doing some testing this evening and it was stable, no idea how stable the 3100 setting will be but i guess time will tell.

oh motherboard is the ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming.

thanks

Hi

I've been following this thread for a while and decided to chime in.

Been in contact with both Corsair and Asus support, since I have the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming and 2 kits of Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15. And ofcourse tons of issues with xmp stability.

Corsair seem to be the jedis here whereas Asus support is arrogant and useless, to put it mildly even.

I had problems with stock bios and thought it'd help with an upgrqade, so I flashed 1102 on. Did not help at all...

After reading countless of posts everywhere on the web I was inspired by some who said that downgrading to various specific bios versions helped.

So I tried from 0802 and onwards, results are that I cannot run with any combination of memory OC speed or timings in bios versions; stock, 0802, 0803 and 1102. Only 2133 SPD, 'cause it simply won't even boot.

But with version 0908 I can run stable @ 2800, alas not with the recommended voltage of 1.35 it has to be 1.5 instead, or again it won't boot. But timings are just like Corsair say they shuold be.

I did notice though that I could run @3000 if I downclocked the BCLK to 97, but that is simply stupid as it acutally slowed the rest of the system down.

So please do tell Asus that with 1102 they just aren't trying hard enough.

Well I'm running 1102 on my Asus Hero Viii board with Corsair 3000 RAM.

I have it running ok without at the moment XMP working as it SHOULD and just don't want to risk it not booting!!! I had to spend a few hours after updating the BIOS to get it working, luck played some part of getting it working. I'm actually quite good at working with computers and this sort of thing, however this being so random and unpredictable means messing around is risky as you won't know if you have a fault when there is not one and vice versa.

Please find a fix! Let me know it will work and I'll update. I don't want to be sending back Motherboards or RAM without any idea why it may not be working!

Asus should be providing support here and making sure their good name is not being tarnished due to some substandard code that is affecting the status quo!

Whoevers fault it maybe it is not your customers!!!

hmmm worth reading the thread!!! I know 1202 is out, it is not new! Read thread......

I updated to 1102 and had issues and don't want any going to 1202 or higher. Really most of the issues are around people not reading things, prime example here...................................... READ the thread and you will then understand.

Not wanting to sound ungrateful for help but it is not help and your comment is useless.....

Hey guys. This is the best Thread regarding this issue I can find on the net. Im not running corsair ram, but im very happy with my corsair liquid cooler and PSU. Im expieriencing the same problems with XMP with my RAM. Just to throw more info in here: My 3200mhz 16-18-18-36 RAM does boot to Windows most of times with XMP. CPU-Z detects it correctly at 1600mhz dual data. Sometimes however, like every 5th boot, I do get the overclocking failed message. I have only enabled XMP, nothing else. I am using the 1102 BIOS on my Asus Z170 Pro Gaming. Hopefully asus will deliver. Thanks to corsair to keep us updated on this issue. The other RAM manufactures don't really seem to care. Nothing official from asus as well, disappointing. I didn't even try to contact them as my RAM is not on the QVL

Ok just to toss this into the mix here is a dump of my systems via CPU-Z

I hope this shows some details that allow Asus Z170 boards and Corsair DDR4 Ram working together.

I highlighted the memory element.

As can be seen the CPU is clocked up 15% and is rock solid, and the memory reports XMP2.

The only BSOD occured as a System_Service_Exception (nviddmkm.sys) hence the Nvidia driver was falling over on build 359.06 but build 361.43 resolved that.

The system also handles graphics at 4K resolutions with no issues either.

This is the same BIOS for that came out a month ago. If you've read through the thread you'll see that we all tried this when it came out to no avail. This did not fix issue...

Tried BIOS 1102.

Boots with 3200 Mhz memory clock for me.

System is stable.

Are you sure???

My DRAM freq is 3000 and yours shows 1600!!! (RAM is 3000 but not using XMP, manual setup)

Also I'm on 1002 BIOS, waiting for new release before upgrading.

In computing, DDR4 SDRAM, an abbreviation for double data rate fourth generation synchronous dynamic random-access memory, is a type of synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) with a high bandwidth ("double data rate") interface.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR4_SDRAM

CPU-Z doesn't show the double data rate, but with a simple calculation you will know the double data rate. :)

2 x 1600 Mhz = 3200 Mhz. Your frequency would show 1500 in CPU-Z, go check it out for yourself.

So I'm using the Asus CPU Z and see 3000MHz. I get your point but it is not what I see.
