The problem is likely due to Dell's tinkering of its BIOS to only support the OEM Dell modules, and may not work correctly with any aftermarket memory modules. I've read similar stories about memory upgrades for other Dell desktops. In addition, some Dell Dimension 4600 desktop systems shipped with a CPU of only FSB533 (133MHz actual) instead of FSB800 (200MHz actual), which won't work with DDR400 memory at full speed. You'll need DDR333 memory if you have such a processor.
Airphotog
This is the processor that I have. PROCESSOR..., 80532, 2.66G, 512, 533, SOCKET N..., DECISION ONE...
RJLeong65
This is the processor that I have. PROCESSOR..., 80532, 2.66G, 512, 533, SOCKET N..., DECISION ONE... In this case, you will need to get DDR333 memory due to the chipset limitation. Intel dictates that you can only use DDR266 or DDR333 memory with an FSB533 CPU on an 865 series chipset. And like I said, this is because Dell does something to its motherboards which will only allow its own OEM memory to automatically downclock to DDR333 speed -- and this automatic downclock to DDR333 won't work at all with aftermarket memory modules. Airphotog
What about changing the processor????
Wired
Wouldn't be worth it in an OEM system, and probably not supported.
Airphotog
I sure wish that the memory condigurator would tell us that it would not work instead of giving us a false answer.....
Wired
I was talking about upgrading the processor, not the memory.
Airphotog
I was talking about the memory. I would not have bought it if the configurator would have said that it would not work. If aftermarket ram does not work in Dell Computers then you should get no results from the congurator.....
Wired
How do they not work? have you tried one stick at a time in each slot?

If aftermarket ram does not work in Dell Computers then you should get no results from the congurator..... Dell has a habit of changing parts mid-stream of a model. The model that you have was originally tested at the products release and the DRAM was found to be working in the system. These OEM companies do not use standard parts and because of that, there can be issues such as this frequently. Possibly the board or other components have been changed. Certainly with OEM machines such as yours, the best bet is to take the system down to a tech shop and have them find, install and test working DRAM. Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted December 3, 2007 Corsair Employee Share Posted December 3, 2007 With that system and CPU you would have to use VS1GB333 or VS512MB333 only.

Dell wants you to use only their own OEM modules even if they cost considerably more money to the system owner than any aftermarket DDR memory. RJLeong65
$99.99 Each This means $199.98 plus tax and shipping for the pair. That would be double the price of what your existing Value Select memory kit costs online.
