bwells46
I'm having trouble getting the memory to run at its rated speed of 2-2-2-5. When I try to run it at this speed, I get errors in memtest86 on one of the DIMMs. However, the memory runs stable at 2-3-2-11-1T. This would be ok except that I paid for 2-2-2-5. I'm running it at 2.75V. Increasing to 2.8V did not help with stability. Any ideas of what I can try? Wired
have you tried it at 2-2-2-5 by itself in multiple slots so as to make sure it isn't a slot that has a problem?
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 30, 2004 Corsair Employee Share Posted September 30, 2004 Also is this socket 939 or 754?
bwells46
The K8N Neo2 Platinum is a socket 939 motherboard. Interestingly enough, I have tried. One of the DIMMs generates errors when run at 2-2-2-5 so I bought another TwinX pack to try it. In that pack, BOTH of the DIMMs generated errors at 2-2-2-5. Net, I have one DIMM out of four that runs by itself at 2-2-2-5. I'd be interested to know what the defect rate at Corsair is for the 3200XL memory. I can run them at dual channel at 2-3-2-11 with no errors but I paid (twice!) for 2-2-2-5. Any other setting that I might be able to try? I've tried 2.8V and it did not matter. Is it really possible that I have 75% defective memory?
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 30, 2004 Corsair Employee Share Posted September 30, 2004 That would suggest maybe the CPU you have just does not like to run at 2-2-2-5. In addition, please check with MSI and see if they have new bios for your MB. And I would try the memory in slots 3-4 and see if the results change! And I would suggest you set the Dim Voltage to 2.8 Volts and set the AGP Voltage to 1.6 Volts!
bwells46
Why would it suggest the CPU? One of the DIMMs will run for 12+ hours at 2-2-2-5. The other three can't make it through a single pass. That suggests the RAM to me. I've tried slots 3 & 4 and they give identical results. Also, what does AGP voltage have to do with running memtest86?
Wired
Long story short, an undervolted video card can mess with the whole bus.
bwells46
Won't increasing the AGP voltage potentially damage my 6800GT and void my warranty? Do you know of any programs I can use to tell exactly what the AGP voltage is so I can see if I even need to up the voltage? I don't have any problems with 3D games or stability when the RAM is set at 2-3-2-11. Wouldn't this demonstrated stability rule out AGP voltage issues? I'm leaning more and more toward trying Crucial's Ballistix memory or OCZ if I can't get this fixed.
Wired
Depends on the warranty of the card itself. He's not suggesting voiding the card's warranty. IIRC, most cards are warrantied up to 1.65 at least, but I may be wrong. As for the AGP voltage, it should tell you in the BIOS. If not, download MotherBoard Monitor and assuming your BIOS gives out the AGP voltage info, MBM will tell you what it currently is at.
bwells46
Ok, here's what I've tried and the result it produced. RAM is at 2-2-2-10-1T for all tests CPU V AGP V RAM V Memtest86 Result 1.5 1.5 2.8 Fail in 1st pass 1.5 1.5 2.85 Fail in 2nd pass 1.55 1.5 2.8 Fail in 1st pass 1.5 1.55 2.8 Fail in 1st pass 1.55 1.55 2.8 Fail in 3rd pass 1.55 1.55 2.85 Fail in 1st pas 1.55 1.60 2.8 Fail in 1st pass 1.55 1.60 2.85 Fail in 2nd pass All I can conclude is that this TwinX1024-3200XL pack is not capable of running at 2-2-2-10. I didn't bother trying 2-2-2-5 since it fails with 2-2-2-10. Any other ideas of something I can try? Corsair RAM Guy? Wired
It is possible that it can run at 2-2-2-5 and not 2-2-2-10. I'd try 2-2-2-5 once to be safe, although I'd guess it's the memory.
bwells46
Yeah, 2-2-2-5 failed as well. Do you know how I go about getting my memory RMAed to Corsair and how long it typically takes? Thanks!
Wired
Sometime monday Ram Guy will see this thread and continue the RMA process.

bwells46
Ok - I have a friend who has a 875-based P4 system. He's going to test the memory on his system and, if it can't do 2-2-2-5-1T there, I'll know it's the memory because he currently has some Kingston RAM running at 2-2-2-5-1T. Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 6, 2004 Corsair Employee Share Posted October 6, 2004 Please do let me know, but you will want to clear his bios before you start testing with our modules or at the least load setup defaults and then set the Dim Voltage to 2.8 Volts and set the timings manually! bwells46
When you test these modules at 2-2-2-5-1T at the factory, do you test them at 2.8V?
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 6, 2004 Corsair Employee Share Posted October 6, 2004 Yes, if the MB does not support 2.75 Volts!
Zielm
Reading on MSI forums I came across this thread: http://forum.msi.com.tw/thread.php?threadid=62955 Hopefully it helps you sort out the compatibility issues with the Neo 2 plat and the corsair twinx XL's. Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 7, 2004 Corsair Employee Share Posted October 7, 2004 bwells46 Did you have a chance to test the modules on another system?
bwells46
My friend is going to test them on his system tonight. I'm pretty sure one of the memory sticks is bad. One of them will run fine by itself at 2-2-2-5-1T but the other one generates errors at 2-2-2-5-1T. I think that when these are tested on the 875P system, it will confirm my suspicions. bwells46
Zielm, Thanks for the thread link! Unfortunatly, I've tried every possible safe combination of AGP, processor, and memory voltages. I think I've just got a bad pack of memory.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 7, 2004 Corsair Employee Share Posted October 7, 2004 O.K. well if you do indeed find one is failing, or if you just want try replacing the modules, then please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
