Bad Corsair TWINX2048-4000PT 2GB Set

Recommended Posts

I ordered a 2GB set of Twinx2048 from ZipZoomFly that turned out to be bad. I have run MemTest86+ on the modules and unfortunately they light up like a Christmas tree with errors.

I have tried for a week now to get ZipZoomFly to send me a RMA number (online forms, calling, emails, etc) with no luck and I am now past their 15 day RMA limit for memory :(

Can you tell me the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set?

I have two machines that I have tried this newRAM in - both are socket 939 chipsets, in particular :

Asus A8V with AMD 3000 (Winchester core).

MSI Neo4 Platinum SLI with AMD 3800 X2.

Both are just running at stock speeds - no overclocking.

In both machines the processor and RAM are at 200 FSB with stock memory timings of 3-4-4-8. And using default setting for voltage, etc.

I had purchased the new Corsair with the thought of perhaps bumping up the FSB 3800 X2 down the road and manually tweaking some settings, trying lower timing, etc but never got that far.

Using these memory sticks I cannot even get Windows XP to start installing w/o BSDs - and both system work fine with other Corsair memory that I have on hand. That is what prompted me to run the sticks through Memtest 86+ and discovered that these particular DIMMs are bad.

Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.8 volts and then set the timings manually to Cas 3-3-3-8, and then test the module/modules one at a time with www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I gave it a whirl with your settings and ran Memtest86+ again, trying 1 module at a time.

Turns out one of them checks out clean, but the second module comes up with a ton of errors and seems to be the culprit.

Being a Dual RAM set I presume I need to return both if I recall your FAQ correctly, so I will follow the link you suggested for an RMA. Thanks again!
