Advice wanted for 2400 MHz DDR3 on AMD platform

Recommended Posts

I decided to upgrade to:

Corsair's Vengeance 32 GB (4x8GB) 2400 MHz DDR3 11-13-13-31 1.65v

Here's my system:

AMD FX 8350

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0

Now I knew when I ordered that, due to the CPU's weak IMC, the memory will not run at 2400 MHz, but I wanted some headroom in case I decided to switch to Intel later this year.

I'm looking for some advice as to what RAM speed/timings/voltage to shoot for on this AMD system. I understand it'll take some stability testing to find out what the CPU is really capable of dealing with.

Just looking for ballpark figures from people experienced with this type of thing. Best I can POST at is 2133 MHz w/ 4x8GB sticks. Haven't done stability testing past 1866 MHz.

There will be some lag in this thread as I am on 2 sticks at the moment. One or both of the other 2 sticks throws errors at tests 6 and 7 in Memtest86+, tested at 1866 and 1333 MHz. Soon as I find the faulty sticks, the kit will be RMA'd, and that will take a couple weeks before I can push the full 32 GB.

Thanks in advance!

That kit should be able to run at DDR3-1866 9-11-10-27/9-10-9-27 and DDR3-2133 11-11-11-28/10-11-11-28 with a Vdimm in the range of 1.5 to 1.6V. I don't know how good the memory training on the Sabertooth 990FX is, but you might have to manually adjust the secondary timings as well (at least partially). Just remember to adjust tRFC to the next higher value compared to what is given in the XMP, because AMD memory controllers only know very few steps for this timing (90/110/160/300/350, probably 300/350 for DDR3-2133/2400).
