zaphod
Without this turning into a saga, here are my experiences with Corsair power supplies with a short question at the end. December 2007 - Purchased HX620 and ran happily with an Abit IP35 Pro December 2009 - Re-used HX620 with a MSI P55-GD80 August 2010 - HX620 began to make a pop sound when power was first applied but I stupidly ignored it. - After a few weeks, the HX650's fuse blew - the fuse in the plug - indicating a serious fault. - Purchased HX650 as a replacement and then RMA'ed the HX620. - Purchased HX650 worked but would whine/buzz randomly for extended periods October 2010 - Decided to try the replacement for the HX620 (a HX650) supplied by Corsair's Netherlands RMA centre - Replacement HX650 worked flawlessly - no whine, no popping and excellent voltage regulation January 2012 - HX650 begins to pop when power first applied but the system runs reliably when running. All cases of popping seem to happen after power is disconnected over night (long periods) and don't happen every time power is applied. Annoyingly, the popping also occurs when the power supply is not connected to anything (motherboard ATX, EPS12V or peripherals). As you can probably guess, I power on the power supply in the morning and power off at night. By this I mean switching off the mains supply provided to it from the electrical socket such that power is not being wasted during the night. It appears that I'm not the only person with the same popping issue in the same scenario... - http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=88093 - http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=65932 - http://forum.corsair.com/v2/showthread.php?t=87688 - http://forum.corsair.com/v2/showthread.php?t=75699 - http://forum.corsair.com/v2/showthread.php?t=59921 - http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75237 ... just to name a few. Would it be reasonable to assume that these power supplies (especially these manufactured by Seasonic) don't like being turned on and off on a daily basis? I would love to purchase more Corsair power supplies for future builds, particularly something from the AX series, but this power-on-popping-issue is quite worrying. Any comments, experiences or solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted January 18, 2012 Corsair Employee Share Posted January 18, 2012 I would not suggest turning the PSU off most MB's need the standby voltage and depending on how many things are running on standby when the system is off it may cause a slight noise. I would just leave the PSU on when you shut down the system.
