logik
Back in Feb 04 I bought a stick of CMX512-2700LL. I'm now looking to get another 512 but it seems like that exact model isn't available. Is there a new model or another stick that will work with my current ram?
logik
So it seems this product is discontinued. Is my only option to ditch the old RAM? Also, what is the rule on matching CPU FSB and RAM FSB true? What are the downfalls of faster RAM FSB?
RJLeong65
So it seems this product is discontinued. Is my only option to ditch the old RAM? Also, what is the rule on matching CPU FSB and RAM FSB true? What are the downfalls of faster RAM FSB? Yes for the first question. As for the second, it depends on your CPU. If you have an Intel CPU, you can go up to 33.3MHz above your CPU's actual FSB speed (this means for a 133MHz FSB/"533FSB" Intel P4 CPU, you can run memory up to 166MHz/DDR333 without any ill effects). But with an AMD CPU (especially a Socket A/462 Athlon XP CPU), it's best not to exceed the CPU's actual FSB speed (this means that if your Athlon XP CPU runs on a 166MHz FSB/"333FSB", you should not run your memory faster than 166MHz/DDR333 without the risk of stability issues). logik
Thanks for the reply.. I have an "AMD Athlon XP 2700+ Thoroughbred w/ 333MHz FSB" So I guess I'll stick with 333... that sucks that I have to ditch the 2700LL... 2-3-2-5! To replace it, you can use DDR400-rated memory - but you may have to manually set the memory speed to 166MHz/DDR333, depending on the SPD programming. Many DDR400/PC3200 modules have an SPD that's programmed only for DDR400 operation, and ignores slower settings - while others (such as the CMX####-3200C2) have an SPD that's programmed for at least DDR400/PC3200 and DDR333/PC2700 operation. (And don't worry much about 3-3-3-8 DDR400 memory; such 3-3-3-8 modules will usually run at 2.5-3-3-7 at DDR333.)
logik
Is there any reason to buy 3200 instead of more 2700? I guess it would be forwards compatible if I got a new CPU...
