The string wasn't long enough, so we had to settle for 56K.

I think if i had to go back to 56k now id give up on computers, too frustrating, when i was on holiday at a freinds i had to use a dial up to check my mail, seemed like i spent more time dialling, then reconecting when it dropped than anything else.

Hey dont knock dial-up, its all some people can get!, I cant get anything else here!, its not too bad, I never get drop outs, 24hr session limits, and I can still manage to download 395Mb in the 24hr period - could be worse, could be WAY WAY out in the sticks, where you dont get more that 19k!!!!!thats what really sucks!

I'm used to being a football field away from an OC backbone. So 56K is hard.

I remember my 4K modem, my 13.3 14.4 36.6 and the ultimate 56 upgrade.

I've been there, I'm just not anymore and don't want to go back! :p

Well I'm in Australia and the fastest ADSL you can get in the entire country is 1.5mpb & thats $120 a month for 10gb (limited to 64kbs after that).

I have to deal with 512/128 for $80 a month.

However I did have a non-functional dial up account for years before this.

I don't do dial up anymore.... :)

Its all about location mate, I live in Tasmania, Australia.

In case you dont know, grab a map, and look at Aussie, see that little island just under Australia?, that is Tasmania, we are still a state of Australia, yet we only have a population of around 480,000 people, far FAR less than any other state, that gives us certain advantages, yet at the same time, some disadvantages also.

For example, due to Tasmanias population, our Telco's consider us as a "Rural" area, even though we do have city's, just like anywhere else, so telecommunications, more specifically, the internet, has not been distributed in the same manner as the rest of the counrty, we are only 20 minutes drive from a city, yet anything more than 56k hasnt reached us yet, but it will get there!, but that doesnt mean were are limited in many other resources.

I cant remember off hand any specific inventions, but us Tasmanians are almost the most inventive people in the world, dont know why, just history has shown this to be the case, so we certainly aint dumb - (we are considered by our "Mainland" counterparts as being a back water state), yet we also have the most beutiful and healthy environment in which to live, you cant beat it really!.

If you ever do a trip to Aussie, dont miss Tassie, you'll be missin' alot!.

Ohh, and no, I do not spend all day just browsing the forums, 56k is a little faster than that, I normally probably wouldnt spend much more than an hour or 2 in the forums, and thats reading a number of threads, and making some of my own posts.

Well i live on a small island in the Irish sea between England and Ireland our population is less that 90,000 and we have 2 MB DSL here.

We dont even have any citys on the island !

270 square miles.

So write to your telecom company and tell them theyve got no excuses !
