Thermaltake Riing RGB

Is corsair developing something similar? It would be awesome to have RGB fans and link lighting node and be able to control them through link software.

 

I think the only way to accomplish this is to modify the thermaltake fan.

 

I gave it a shot with the parts I had on hand and so far have only succeeded in ruining a fan. :)

 

I have some parts on order from china. I'll post here again in a couple weeks if i can get it to work.

Yeah. It shouldn't be hard to do. Just buy Riing fan, replace the led with a corsair led and connect the led cable to the led node or commander. You might need to drill a hole for the cable.

Unless the riing fan will stop working cause you removed the led cable. In that case try to keep both cables in the fan shd have the thermaltake led turned off.

Fist off, this is not finished, I was just trying to see if i could get this to work at all.

 

I need to use proper wires, the ones I am using here are way too big, 28 AWG would be way more ideal.

 

This is not an easy mod. Karoloydi you aren't gonna be able to just "replace the LED with the corsair LED"

 

I had to find some very small 4 pin RGB LED's, and replace the LED's that came with the fan. Still the new LED are bigger and a different shape than the original, which meant taking a dremmel to the fan to make room. Also the new LED are 3.3V not 12, so resistors had to be used so the bulbs didn't burn out instantly.

 

Sorry for crappy photos, my camera sucks. This really will look good once I get all my fans swapped out with these. I plan on sleeving the LED wires along with the actual fan wires so it looks good one all installed.

Here is some photos of the completed project, using proper wires, heat shrink, sleeving etc.

 

Here is the inside of the fan with single color LED swapped out for RGB.

And my thoughts on the project:

 

PROS:

 

RGB control. pretty obvious but wiring them this way the color and brightness can be controlled, as opposed to having to pick from one of 4 colors.

 

Fan speed can be controlled without impacting the lights. The way these come by default when you slow the fans the LED's dim, by wiring them separately that can be avoided.

 

CONS:

 

It is impossible to take these apart without breaking some of the plastic clips that hold them together. There are 8 total, 2 in each corner. I have taken apart 8 of these fans so far and have always broken at least one of those 8 clips.

 

Setting LED's to white (100% RGB). comparing this to the factory white LED's the color has a blue/green tint to it. that's because the lumen output of the red LED is bit less than the blue and green. You can get around that a bit by setting red to 100% and blue/green to 90%, but its still not as "white" as the pure white LED.

Nh-790 you are killing me with the wire nuts. I know it was probably just a temporary thing but man. Those things only ever belong behind a household wall.

 

In reality I'm just poking a little fun at that photo. You are using what you have and doing science. Congrats on the success! That's pretty cool.

I remember asking for this a while back and got nowhere.

 

Thermaltake failed though, they made it a 3pin fan so when the RPM is lowered the brightness of the LED also is lowered. If the was PWM the fan would get the fill 12volts keeping the LED bright and the fan speed controlled via PWM

Awesome work!

I think you are the best person to ask for advice for my planned mod.

I'm planning to do an RGB mod on my 980ti cause the green color is awful with my setup.

I found two threads with instructions how to mod leds fire single color change to give you an idea:

So that I won't invalidate my warranty I'm thinking of removing the whole LED strip including the logo.

Then I'll connect the RGB led strip light to my controller and insert it in the place of the old led strip.

I'm thinking maybe it won't look good shining the light through the hole. Maybe I can use a piece of plastic with similar light diffusing properties as a the original to make it look more like the original.

If this doesn't look good i will try and sand down the original rubber and use that as a diffuser.

Two more things I am not sure of. How electrically safe my planned mod is and if I will be able to hide the cable properly. I'm thinking of hiding it between the graphics card power cables.
