njt1982
All the sites I look at tell me I can "only" put 8Gb RAM into my Envy 17" 2101ea (i7 2630QM 2.0Ghz / Intel HM65). It currently has 6Gb, however I want to run some VM's on it so need/want more RAM. The Corsair site doesn't seem to have all of their products on it, for example I could not find either of these in their product list: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9-Laptop-1333MHz-So-Dimm/dp/B006DI9PG8 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMXS16GX3M2A1600C10-Vengeance-Performance-So-Dimm/dp/B0076W9Q5A Also the Configurator system doesn't list the 2101ea: http://www.corsair.com/learn_n_explore The Crucial site says my laptop is compatible with both PC10600 and PC12800 RAM. It currently has 6Gb RAM (stock config) which is running at, I believe, 1333Mhz (DRAM is 666Mhz) at 9-9-9-24. The question really is, has anyone successfully installed 16Gb into their Envy 17 2101ea? Is there really a hard limit of 8Gb or was that simply stated because, at the time of production, there were no feasible 2x8Gb kits? *ANY* feedback on this would be much appreciated. I'm chuffed with the laptop but would love more RAM. Always want more RAM. ;-)

peanutz94
Is there really a hard limit of 8Gb or was that simply stated because, at the time of production, there were no feasible 2x8Gb kits? Sorry, but as you have already found out the max supported capacity is only 8 gig. But you might want to call HP and ask them anyway if it's possible to install more . Chances are this is a hardware limitation of their mainboard. EDIT: Are all competitors considered profanity here?! It's not that they are considered profanity, it goes back to a time where the other competitors did not have their own support sites and would often come here for help. So the filters were put in place to prevent that. You agreed to it when you agreed to the terms and conditions for posting on this site. njt1982
Thanks for the links regarding the profanity filter. Makes sense, I guess. And makes moderation easier. As for the RAM limit, I'm sure I saw that the US version could have 16Gb... /me looks for URL...
peanutz94
I found that information on HP's site. And there was no mention of different specs for different regions. *shrugs*
njt1982
According to MrMemory, the 2090NR and 2070NR can both take 2x8Gb... http://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory/product.asp?ProductID=71566 http://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory/product.asp?ProductID=71567 The 2101ea isn't listed. The unnamable competitor claims only 8Gb.
njt1982
Afaik, the 2101ea was only in the uk (it was my only option in the uk store and the only result for the 2xxx series on amazon.co.uk). The US store listed models like 2070 and 2090. The all have the same CPU, gou, etc but one has 2x500gb raid and the othe has 2x4gb ram. The us ones come with 3d glasses too... Woooooo! ;)
arenjee
Hi Bit late to the party, but I can confirm that an HP Envy 2101EA, with an i7-2670QM processor at least, happily takes 16GB RAM, although all memory vendors are restricting their offerings to 8GB for this model. I think the confusion may be due to a parts and technical specification document covering models #2001-2090 which states 8GB as a maximum, which doesn't seem to have been revised for the 2101EA machine.
