Crystal 280X vertical GPU?

Hello there,

I have been upgrading my "small" build lately because its my preferred TV "console" setup. This thing is bascially to me what a console is to others, just a bit more expensive (and powerful)... Now I have reached the point where the GPU gets hot as ****. In BFV with RT on its just 75°, but in ME: Andromeda it somehow reaches almost 90°. This is probably a worse case scenario but I want to be prepared for the future. What would you do for optimal ventilation in this case, vertical GPU, fans or bigger case? I had some ML120 fans laying around but with my new graphics card those won't fit under it anymore.

Keep in mind my build is not finalized yet, so the cable management is a bit ****ty and I have reused some parts from my old HTPC build, that is why they don't match. Here are the specs:

  • Corsair Crystal 280X (White)
  • 2 x ML 140 RGB (front)
  • 2 x ML 140 RGB (top)
  • ASUS B550M TUF (AM4)
  • Ryzen 1700 @ 3.8 GHz
  • Corsair H60 (2018) AIO Watercooler (no mounting because its 120)
  • EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA
  • 16 GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB 4266 @3200 C16
  • 250 GB 960 EVO, 1 TB Crucial MX500, ~16 TB HDDs
  • Seasonic Prime Ultra 650 W

This machine is a beast, but how do I improve the airflow? The backside doesn't have a fan mounting position. I like this case, but its airflow is limited unlikely. Should I go for a 460X? I really liked this cases small form factor and was fascinated by the idea of a powerful mATX beast that would rip any console apart.

What I've found works best is to have the top and front as intake with fans on the bottom as exhaust. I use a Commander Pro with temp sensors in various places to control fan speeds. The bottom rear is the warmest area.

The tempered glass at the top acts like a lid and prevents the warm air from escaping; it's restrictive for intake as well but not as bad. The bottom has no restriction, however. Just don't put it on carpet (but you wouldn't do that anyway, right?)

I mounted two noctua 60mm fans at the back. Here's a 3D printed bracket made to size for the 280x so you can get to do just that. It dropped my internal temps about 5 degrees or so.

Here's a vertical GPU stand you can 3D print up too, also made for the 280x if you're inclined.

I bought a second set of feet from Corsair for the 280x, doubled them up with the connected ones, and then reattached them to double the clearance for more airflow.

Then just screw them back in, and they fit nicely on there. You can also print up spacers for the glass to allow more air if you need it.

Or just get something from the hardware store. M4 standoffs will work as well, and fit perfectly.

I use the bottom and front as intake and the top and rear as exhaust, but every setup is different, so just use your best judgement.
