Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz running only at 2133 mhz

Hi, just finish building my 1st pc. I have the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB 3000MHz C15, but its only running at 2133 mhz as seen in the bios (https://imgur.com/a/6aefAPx) Anyone know how to fix this?

Something from your screen shot doesn't look right. If you installed 16GB of ram (assuming 2 sticks) why does it show only 8GB? Try power off and ensure the ram is installed properly in your primary channel, make sure they are fully installed in the slots. (typically slots A2 + B2 for AM4 but check your manual to be sure)

XMP profiles sometimes won't work. In that case simply reset your memory settings to AUTO and then set your DRAM voltage, frequency, and timings manually.

The 2700x is Zen+ CPU and the spec ram frequency is DDR4-2933.

The 3700x is Zen2 CPU and the spec ram frequency is DDR4-3200.

DRAM-Calculator-for-Ryzen-1.7.3 is your friend. Run a program to get your SPD data that you can use to help input into dram calculator to try and calculate settings that may work for you.

do you mean change the dram frequency from auto to 2933 mhz. I tried that and nothing changed and it stayed at 2133

I would advise getting the right information to use DRAM-Calculator-for-Ryzen-1.7.3 first. It sounds like your memory training is failing so you get reverted back to 2133.

You may need additional settings such as a more compatible ProcODT value than what you board may be trying to use a default. Dram calculator can suggest compatible values.

If your going to wing-it I would try the following steps...

1) Set your DRAM's XMP voltage (1.35v is common)

and SOC to 1.1v (do not exceed 1.2v)

reboot

2) Change your frequency (start from 2133 and work your way up)

repeat increase and reboot until you reach your target frequency or stop at the frequency you can reach with a successful post

reboot

3) Change your primary timings

reboot

4) Memtest that your setting work

5) Change your other timings as needed

6) Memtest and stress test your system because it really sucks after playing 30 minutes of a game and your system BSOD because the RAM heated up revealing the overclock to be unstable.

I dont understand why this has to be so complicated, Im not trying to overclock.

The Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz is listed as compatible to B450 tomahawk max. Does everyone has to do all these steps just to get corsair ram to work at advertised speed?

If the AUTO or XMP settings won't do it out of the box then you need to set them manually. For some using XMP works just fine. For others not so much.

I had LPX 2400 modules and there were no problem working at stock or overclocked to 3200 but I also had RGB Pro modules and they had extreme difficultly to work at advertised timings and it took several BIOS updates over time to straighten it out with the exception of 1 timing that just wouldn't work.

In the end the combination of motherboard, cpu, and ram will weigh in on the user experience and your experience can be different than others even with the same parts.

1st gen Ryzen (Zen) had lots of problems with RAM compatibility but it's improved significantly since then with Zen+ and Zen2, however not always perfect out of the box experience.

BIOS updates can effect compatibility as well. If you're having trouble an option is to update to the latest BIOS (not beta bios) but you need to be careful and read any vendor supplied notes and directions.

The bare bones basics - if starting from scratch you might

1) reset to bios defaults

2) set DRAM voltage (do you know what your voltage should be? it should be printed on the back of your ram)

3) set frequency 2933 because that is your processor spec. Your 3000 ram spec is technically a ram overclock for your CPU.

If those simple steps won't work with an up to date BIOS more troubleshooting becomes necessary or maybe you try a different pair of ram.

Sometimes people get bad ram sticks and further testing is needed to identify the bad ram stick. It happened to me once.

Sometimes ram is not installed properly by mistake such as not fully inserted or in wrong slots. AM4 is typically slots A2 & B2 are primary but check your manual.

So I updated my mobo bios, made sure that ram is in a2 and b2 slot.

Tried to change the frequency and timing both manually and through the memory try it option. I also tried using ryzen master to change my memory clock speed. But nothing changed, its stayed at 1066 mhz and 15-15-15-36 no matter what i changed

I dont know much about overclocking, nor do i want to. But if any1 has something else for me to try, I will. and no, I dont have a different pair of ram. I could purchase a new pair, but that means I just wasted $80 on this one

I used to have the old version of the b450 Tomahawk and if I recall correctly the "try it" option was a quick way to set frequency and timings (maybe voltage too) from a preset list MSI provided. This is potentially changing too many ram options at once preventing you from troubleshooting.

Instead what I want you to try is ONLY setting DRAM voltage and frequency and allow the rest of your memory settings to operate on AUTO (A-XMP should also be OFF or DISABLED). With only these two settings we should be able to get some measurable effect even with bumping the frequency up by one notch to DDR4-2400 and up.

Did you ever find out what your DRAM voltage was supposed to be? (printed on back of your ram module)

When manipulating settings in Ryzen Master it changes some data in the AMD Overclocking section in BIOS. This was a nightmare when I last looked at it and would fight with the same options I was able to set elsewhere in the BIOS. I can't tell if maybe you are having a similar problem (my BIOS could have been junk at the time).

Try resetting to BIOS default, save. reboot, then go into the AMD Overclocking section in BIOS and make sure any overclocking features are OFF or DISABLED to ensure we are not fighting some junk that might be setup there. I would avoid using Ryzen Master to change any memory settings only only use BIOS to change memory settings for now.

Can you give some screenshots of BIOS where you are changing these settings.

So i went to restore default in setting: https://imgur.com/a/YNM85Do

This is what it looks like after: https://imgur.com/a/8xUKPrJ

Basically i enabled xpm profile 2, restart, but nothing changed still shows 2133mhz in bios and cpuz https://imgur.com/a/6aefAPx

Then I tried to set different speed and timing in "memory try it", basically from 2400 to 2933, neither the frequency nor the timing changed from the default 2133, 15-15-15-36 https://imgur.com/a/OaupcGX

I also tried to manually set different dram freq from 2400 to 2933, again nothing changed

I dont know the dram voltage is but according to corsair product website: "Tested Voltage: 1.35V" listed under spec https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Memory/VENGEANCE-LPX/p/CMK16GX4M2B3000C15#tab-tech-specs

I also check mobo website (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B450-TOMAHAWK-MAX#support-mem-14) ram CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 is also listed as 1.35v

What should I try next?

Thanks for the screenshots. Do not use "try it" or A-XMP.

1) Reset to BIOS defaults, save, and reboot again to undo any of your changes.

2) In the "Advanced DRAM Configuration" is likely where you need to set DRAM voltage to 1.35v

(get a screenshot of this submenu)

reboot

3) Set DRAM Frequency to DDR4-2400

reboot

enter bios again. Did the frequency change stick?

(get a screenshot)

sry, I forgot the scroll down, i think this is the voltage setting? https://imgur.com/a/jGuDqHm

So I changed to 1.35v and 2400mhz as suggested, restart, but still at 2133mhz: https://imgur.com/a/afKXrn3

Took a screenshot of Advanced dram configuration screen (did not change anything):https://imgur.com/a/bFSOq1V

any idea? thanks

Edit: I just noticed that the ddr voltage did not change either: https://imgur.com/a/O1EY6BF

still at 1.2 and not the 1.35v where i set it, is that normal?

Well something strange is going on. Do you have debug LED's on that board? Is there one for ram that is light up?

Pull your ram out and put on only one stick in A2. Then retry the basic steps 1,2,3.

I tried to put a single ram in A2 slot and using xmp profile 2, I was able to successfully increase the speed to 2933mhz!

I tested both ram separately and both worked as a single ram at 2933mhz. But when I used both ram at the same time, Im not able to change the frequency anymore, its stuck at 2133mhz.

Any idea why?

EDIT: voltage also changed automatically to 1.35v: https://imgur.com/a/8M2Kdoh

So everything works as a single ram but not both :(

The profile contains voltage, frequency, and timings. It's just a bunch of data programmed in the SPD chip of your ram sticks. When you select the profile it loads the data into your BIOS config.

You did buy your ram as a 1 single kit (2 sticks) correct?

When you look at the backside of the dimms do they both show the exact same model and version number?

Do you have the ability to return or exchange your current ram kit with another?

As an option...today I see this on newegg: Corsair LPX DDR4-3200 kit (probably higher quality kit) on sale for $75 and has good reviews from a lot of Ryzen users.

Yes, single kit and unfortunately the return/exchange date has passed.

I read somewhere that this could be related the cpu and I might have damaged it during installation. I try to figure this out before I decide to buy a new pair of ram

Thanks for all you help

What happened to your cpu during installation?

Good luck.

I was having trouble installing the stock cooler because it was too tight. So I accidentally lifted the cooler off with the cpu. Huge beginner mistake.

But everything worked fine till this point, so I kinda forgot about it. So it might be related to damaged CPU/mobo pin from what I read.

Could end up to be a very costly mistake, Im not sure yet :(

It would be interesting to know what happens if you only have one stick installed in B2? Does it behave the same as in A2?

Unless you pulled/broke a pin off or damaged the socket. I think you will be ok.

With your system running on one stick in A2 at DDR4-2933 can you provide a screen shot of

Ryzen_Timing_Checker_1.05 ?

Thanks for the screenshot. I'm thinking it's worth a shot to use DRAM Calculator for Ryzen to see if you can get 2 sticks working properly. Maybe you need better settings for ProcODT and RTT values and DRAM calc will help suggest working values for those. Do you know if Ryzen Master also spits out this data on screen? I have Zen2 CPU so Ryzen Master changes it's view but I don't recall if it gives the same info for Zen+ cpus.

Interesting. When both ram sticks are installed does the DRAM debug LED also stay lit?

With your system running on one stick in A2 can you run the free version of

Thaiphoon to extract your ram chip data and post a screenshot? (after running the program click the read button and choose the option from the popup, this will produce a report, screenshot the entire report of dram info plus timings)

nope, boots fine with both sticks, no debug led, just couldnt get it to change to anything other than default 2133mhz. But a single stick in A2 works fine at 2933mhz
