h100i + i7-3770K OC = Hot!

Hey guys,

Not really new to building PCs or overclocking. However, this is my first stab at using water. I've overclocked my chip to 4.6 GHz on 1.25 volts. HWMonitor is telling me that I idle around 40 C and top out at 88C while Folding@Home. Ambient is around 70 F. There is plenty of air flowing through the rad and it's pretty warm. Reseating the block didn't help. I'm afraid I got a defective unit sent to me as brand new. The fins were bent out of the box like someone owned it for a while. I'm used to Corsair products coming out of box clean! Should I try anything else or submit a RMA request?

Thanks in advance!

Edit - I've replaced the chip's TIM with Noctua NT-H1 as well as the supplied grease on the water block.

no way the overall 3770 will do 4.6 oc,you may do a 4.5 with correct voltages but even that is subjective, you most likely will top out at 4.3 or 4.4.these coolers are better than air but not for high oc with hot chips,,for that you need custom cooling.

Thanks for your speedy reply.

I'll take a screenshot of CPU-Z to show I have 4.6 GHz and post it when I can. I must have gotten a better than average chips since my friend's i7-3770K tops out at 4.5 GHz on 1.25V. He's hitting the high 70's according to HWMonitor using a H110.

On a side note, I've also managed to set my timings from 9-10-9-24 2T to 9-10-9-27 1T.

I took apart my rig to fit a competitor's AIO water cooler. It's on order from the Egg. It has a stronger pump and is expandable so I'll be adding another rad if temps are still high.

My new AIO cooler is in! Max load temps while folding hover at 80c now. My conclusion is that the H100i is working correctly. I will be using it in another PC build without such a high overclock =)

I need 4 new 1155 double sided screws and 1 new thumb screw. Where can I purchase those items?

Edit - After a fair amount of research, it looks like a lot of temp monitoring programs are incompatible with Ivybridge and up. My mobo's telling me that I'm hovering around 60c while folding. HWMonitor reports 80c. Asus recommends Aida64 as a viable alternative to Probe to monitor CPU temps instead of real temp, core temp, etc. So maybe, just maybe, my H100i was actually around 70c haha! The air coming out of my new AIO's rad is a lot cooler than the air blown out of the H100i. The fans are also working a lot less so it's also quieter. To keep all things equal, I'm using the same static pressure optimized fans on both AIOs. Good data for anyone else running into "high temps" according to 3rd party temp monitors using any of Corsair's fine products.

Realtemp works just fine with my 3770K.

My H100i runs about 73C on the hottest core after 5 hours of P95 at 4.5 with 1.248 volts on stock TIM.

What fans are you using, and what speed are they running? The mobo usually is reading the socket temperature, and not the core temperature. Also, what case do you have and your fan orientation?

Also, have you checked for WHEA errors at that speed and voltage?

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I'm not sure if the rules allow me to name the fans. I could pm you unless it's ok by the mods.

The fans and pump are both running at 40%.

My case is a Corsair 350D with 2 x 140 mm fans in the front as intake. 1 x 120 mm fan in the back as an exhaust. The rad is mounted on top with the fans under it pushing up as an exhaust.

Also, I'm not familiar with WHEA.

OK. I'm using Noctua NF-F12 PWM fans pushing air from inside the case through the 240 rad for exhaust. It's set to ramp up to 40% at 60c. AI Suite II is monitoring everything. Fan Expert 2 also has the frontintake Noctua AF-14 PWM fans to go from 40% to 100% from 40c to 75c. If the AI Suite CPU temp monitor is incorrect, and HWM monitor is actually correct, how can I set the fans profiles to correspond with HWMonitor?

There is what a WHEA error is, and here is a link to a handy program that will show you how many you have.

If these are cropping up, its a sure sign you need more voltage, and your overclock is not stable.

Many thanks, kwiza. I'll give that error check a go tomorrow or new tear's day when i finally get some downtime.

I've read somewhere that having multiple monitoring programs can skew the results do to polling of some sort. I've gone ahead and formatted my SSDs and reinstalled Win7 and it's actually reading a few degrees centigrade cooler. I think the bios fan control parameters have something to do with it since I'm not using AI Suite at all.

YMMV gents. These are the joys and tribulations of learning through trial and error after jumping head first into the rabbit hole.

AI suite monitors socket temp, and not core temp. I would load up Corsair link and have your rad fans hooked into the pump. Setup what ever fan profile you would like from quiet to performance, or even a custom profile. I would set them to run off the pump temp and not the cpu temp.

Once you have that where you want it, you can do away with Link if you like because all that is stored on the pump. So even if the software does not load, you fan profiles and LED colors will continue to function as you originally setup.

If you ditch AI suite, and set the fans in the bios, it will still run off socket temperature and will take a little trial and error. Usually you start at 60% and work your way up from there, if that's the minimum the bios will let you set for the case fans.

I start mine going up at 40C, but your case is different than mine and will not be the same. If 60% is too loud, you may have to revert to Fan Xpert 2 or another program like speed fan to control them to suit your tastes.

I'm no longer using the H100i. The double sided pins are bent and one broke. I'm currently using a competitor's AIO water cooler. Everything seems fine and dandy at the moment. I would love to get replacement double sided screws and thumbscrews so I can put the H100i in another build.
