Coriolis
Hi everybody. I bought this used PC few days ago. There was a problem with windows recognising only 4 out of 6 GB of memory, but I hoped it was power supply. So I bought a good power supply (80+ bronze) and managed to replace and reconnect without removing Mobo or any of the components. It didn't solve the problem. After that for two days I was searching the net, but couldn't find solution to this particular combination. I then decided to configure the memory in BIOS, but really got lost in the sea of information. So I came here hoping that someone could help me with that. First, in my mobo manual, as well as on asus website, the qvl lists tr3x6g1600c9(xmp) as compatible. I found out that xmp is improved feature for second generation of intel core processors. I wonder does it mean that my tr3x6g1600c9 is compatible, as it is not on the list per se. My cpu is oldo (i7 920 do) Second, cpu-z recognises all three dims, triple chanell 6144Mbytes DDR3 and gives me this information: NB frequency: 2138 MHz Then in timings section: DRAM frequency: 534.5 MHz FSB:DRAM 2:8 CL 8.0 tRCD 8 tRP 8 tRAS 20 command rate 1t My cpu runs at 12 x 133.6 GHz. Id really appreciate if somebody knows what are the right settings for this platform and how to change them in bios, because now in bios I can't see any speeds as they are all on AUTO. Id like to set them manually, but where do I start. Thank you
Yellowbeard
Try clearing your CMOS (aka resetting or clearing the BIOS) and then restart, enter the BIOS and then enable XMP.
Coriolis
Thanks, Ill try it tomorrow. Enabling xmp allows me to manually set speeds?
Yellowbeard
No, enabling XMP automatically sets voltages, timings, and frequency.
peanutz94
There was a problem with windows recognising only 4 out of 6 GB of memory, but I hoped it was power supply. So I bought a good power supply (80+ bronze) and managed to replace and reconnect without removing Mobo or any of the components. It didn't solve the problem A PSU wouldn't cause that type of issue. However those boards were pretty notorious for memory issues and could be caused from an incorrect BIOS setting to uneven pressure on the heatsink, to bent pins in the CPU socket. but we will worry about that at a later time. I would start out by trying the XMP profile as YB suggested. If that still detects incorrectly then see what your QPI voltage is set to in your BIOS. It will be under AITweaker/Overclocker menu. You might also consider testing the modules one at a time with memtest86. Let each module run for a min of 3 passes or until you get an error. Coriolis
Thank you. I tried few combinations with sticks. Each pair is detected properly in first two red slots, so the furthest red slot definitely doesn't work. I then put the third stick in third black slot (with the two in first two red slots) and it still showed 4 GB. So I thought, aha, that's the third channel broken. But when I next put all dims in black slots expecting to see the same 4 GB, the machine didn't even boot. So now I'm going to try what Yellowbeard suggested, and will report the results. Coriolis
I just can't understand how it works. I successfully reset cmos, but after literally hours of searching can't start meddling with settings. If I set xmp in AITweaker menu, do I then have to create a profile? Or do I only set xmp and check the settings. What exacrly is the function of xmp and why is it in every tutorial I've seen connected with creating a profile? I could really use some help to at least start. Thank you
Yellowbeard
You don't create a profile. In the memory options section of your BIOS, enable XMP. This will automatically set your memory frequency, voltages, and timings using information stored on the memory module itself.
Coriolis
Wow, that was easy, and I lost the whole day on it. But it didn't work. Everything is the same. Should I try any more bios changes, or go and remove the cooler. The problem with cooler is that I've never installed one in my life, and because it's aftermarket nero cooler, I'm not sure if it's safe to run cpu without it. akopads
I had the same issues on the P6T SE (DIMM slot 1 in my case) using tr3x6g1333c9 triple set. I have tried nearly all possible BIOS settings but nothing has worked, only 4GB instead of 6GB were recognized. My solution: throw away the ASUS board and buy a MSI X58 board on eBay. On MSI boards, mostly all kinds of memory modules are working error free.
