TX650 and Powercolor 5970 graphics card

Hi,

i have encountered strange problem with TX650 power supply and powercolor 5970 graphics card.

The problem:

- After inserting this card and connecting everything as it should be and powering up the PC screen is black, nothing happens, no bios POST, nothing. All the leds and fans both on MB and 5970 are lit (5970 goes into berserk with 100% fan speed). 5970 also indicates that there is not enough power (two red leds on the back of the card).

Whats strange about this? I tested same graphics card at work with PSU of just 530W (no idea whats the manufacturer) and it works fine (loads right to the windows).

My first guess was maybe MB too old, so i basically upgraded all of the old components (Gygabite G1.Sniper B5, Corsairs 2x4GB DDR3, intel i5 4570S 2.9GHz) and it still is the same problem. The old GeForce GTX260 works fine.

I know that 5970 needs 20A on 6pin and 15A on 8pin rails.

Yes i tried the second slot as well, same thing. Also tried switching cables order, using optional power rails (those with 5 pins i think), but nope nothing, zip, nada :/

Today i will try the PSU (that 530W) from work if i can get it without someone noticing :)

pdate to the issue, i have now RM850 PSU and it still f***s up :/ could it be that single 12V rail is bad in this case?

Nope, at this point your either going to have a bad card or a bad MB. My guess would be the board.

Testing it at work on a different machine isn't a proof positive test for your sytem. Just that the card ran fine on a completely different system.

He didn't try the video card in his work machine. He just borrowed the PSU from work or at least that's how I read it.

I don't think it's a single rail vs multi rail issue either. Something other compatibility issue with a Corsair brand PSU is rearing its ugly head. Are you sure you're using the right cables and connections on the Corsair units?

Right in the OP's OP:

And in later one i mentioned i will borrow work PSU ;)

So It was tested on the same MB, rams etc (HDD didnt even bother to connect) two corsair PSU units - doesnt work, FSP 500W PSU - works. Only thing different is PSU brand at this point and one has single rail the other has multi rail (unless there is something else in PSU that affects video card).

So peanut and I were both on target. The power supply is obviously the issue for whatever reason.

I've always been a proponent of single rail designs because there is little to no chance of overloading the entire power supply with a single device. Each device connected can draw from the power supply's entire available current. On the other hand, a multi-rail system has individual voltage regulators for each rail all of which hit their limit at substantially less than the rating for the total power supply.

Unless you are overloading the 12v rail in the multi-rail power supply with the video card which I don't think is happening, I'd say the 850's kaput or otherwise incompatible with your system.

Well its brand new 850 so i dont think its should be something wrong with it. Its more likely to be something with video card (but since it worked with another PSU its really weird problem). Dropped my video card for a check up at pc store i usually buy stuff, tomorrow i should know some kind of the answer one way or the other :sigh!:

I understand about expecting a new, just-out-of-the-box, power supply to work but failures can and do happen. In any event, good luck in getting it all sorted out.

Have a good holiday season!
