Raptor382
I checked the Corsair memory finder, and it suggests for my motherboard that I can use the Dominator ram of over 2400MHz. I have the Gigabyte Z77-D3H, and according to their specs: 0.4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory * Due to a Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than the size of the physical memory installed. 0.Dual channel memory architecture 0.Support for DDR3 2800(OC)/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules 0.Support for non-ECC memory modules 0.Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules It would appear that this board was basically made for 1600MHz ram, but could be overclocked to 2800MHz? Is this correct? I'm trying to find some replacements to my current ram. I currently have Corsair Vengeance LP memory, 8GB, not sure of the speed. I want to go with 16GB of memory and not sure if I should stick with the Vengeance ram or go with Dominator. I am assuming that the Dominator line is the higher end line? Also, is it better to go with 4x4 or 2x8 or does it matter? I prefer 2x8 so that way, later on down the line if I want to move to 32GB, I can just add 2 more sticks. Suggestions? Also, im running an i5 3570K
Synthohol
It would appear that this board was basically made for 1600MHz ram, but could be overclocked to 2800MHz? Is this correct? that depends on the CPU memory controller limits on the CPU and the speed of the ram used. if you tried to run 1600 ram @2800 you will likely be dissapointed :): Also, is it better to go with 4x4 or 2x8 or does it matter? I prefer 2x8 so that way, later on down the line if I want to move to 32GB, I can just add 2 more sticks. 2x8 better BUT you cannot just "add more ram later" see my sig for details. peanutz94
It would appear that this board was basically made for 1600MHz ram, but could be overclocked to 2800MHz? Is this correct? Correct! You would need to overclock the memory controller on your CPU to achieve speeds above 1600mhz.
Raptor382
ok, so I cannot use the 1866Mhz ram then, only 1600...unless i OC. crucial website says the ram i can use is: PC12800 (1600Mhz), PC10600 (1333MHz), and PC14900(1866MHz) (im assuming the 14900 is actually listed on websites as PC15000?) peanutz94
You can use 1866mhz memory. That would be a small overclock and easily achievable. As you have noticed, you MB will support higher speeds, but it's your CPU that wil be the deciding factor of how high you can overclock. Most modern CPU's are capable of running at least 2133mhz, but after that it's extremely hit or miss because of the higher overclocks.
Raptor382
awesome, so im going to run out to frys and pick up some new memory, most likely ill go with what they have in stock, which will be most likely the dominator or the vengeance pro. will the xmp automatically OC it to the right frequency or am i going to have to manually adjust it? peanutz94
XMP should do all the work for you. Just be sure your BIOS is up to date and you shouldn't have any problems.
Raptor382
and lastly, ive decided on the 1600Mhz vengeance, however, i can get the ram in two different types. One type is 10-10-10-27 and the other is 9-9-9-24 for about $17 more. Is it worth the extra $17 to get the lower latency?
peanutz94
It's nothing you would ever notice i real world performance.
