mraroid
Hi folks.... For the most part, I can build up computers from scratch and mostly do fine in configuring hardware and software. I work on linux boxes (mostly servers), Macs and PCs. My buddy asked me to put together a windows box for him so he could use some higher end editing software to edit and burn real Blu-ray DVDs in 3D. My profile reflects the parts for that build. When it was all built, and I pressed the on button, the fans spun up for maybe one second, then shut down. That is all I can get out of it. I installed a H100 Hydro Cooler. I plugged the two fans for the radiator into the slots on the CPU water cooled cover/case. I think I lost the USB cable that runs from the CPU cooler to a internal USB port. Do I need that for the computer to spin up? I will order it from Corsair but they are closed today. Any other guesses on why when I turn it on it just spins the fans for about 1 second and then goes dead? I thought about rolling in the original intel i3 processor I installed out. Then installing the original fan that came in the box to see if the problem is with the H100. I can supply many more details if need be. Usually I fix stuff like this with in a hour or so, but I am dead in the water on this one. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance. mraroid
Latharion
The USB cable exists to enable the H100i to communicate with the Link software. It is not necessary for the pump and fan controller to function. The fan controller will default to the last fan profile that was loaded in the software or factory default (whichever was last loaded). If I remeber right, the default profile slopes the fan based directly on the temperature on a sliding scale so it will start up at full speed (normal for any PWM fan), then immediately slow down to a slower speed directly related to the temperature of the processor. Are you using the supplied fans, or third party fans? Also note that the power connector includes a fan connector that is supposed to be places on a motherboard fan connector. This connector does not inform the motherboard that there is a fan present if used on the CPU fan header, so the motherboard may be sensing the "lack of a CPU fan" and therefor shutting down the system for "safety". An easy fix for this issue is to attach a case fan (any case fan) to the CPU fan header.

I am using one original fan, and then a 3rd party fan for the # 2 fan. The fan enclosed with the H100 was large enough to hit the memory, so I switched to a slightly smaller one. I am glad to know the USB cable is not needed to boot this bad boy. I do have some 3rd party case fans. I will connect them to the CPU FAN connector and see what happens. Can I then plug the H100 into any 'ol fan connector on the motherboard? The H100 has two power connectors - one is a normal fan connector, and the second is a old time power connector (but with two pins, not four). Do I plug in one but not the other, or both? Directions did not say. I went to Corsair's web site but found no additional documentation other then what I have. I sure appreciate your help. mraroid
wiggle
Dumb question, did you plug in the 4? pin power cable to the ATX_12 socket on the motherboard? Not doing so may cause the exact on-off problem you are having.

Not doing so may cause the exact on-off problem you are having. Thanks for double checking with me. Are you talking about the main power cable that runs from the power supply to the motherboard? If so, that is plugged in and in addition the tail end with I think 4 or 6 connections is plugged in as well. mraroid
wytnyt
mraroid try reseating your ram chips as this is an initial check during boot. the usb being connected wont cause this,.if it were a usb fault,it would still boot on..with the tach lead there would be a warning saying ''no cpu-fan connected'' from the tach lead not being connected. hope this helps
