memoryless
I have a HP Z420 Workstation. I am trying to upgrade the memory from 16GB (8x2GB) to 32GB (8x4GB). I have purchased 8 CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 (4GB XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24) DIMMs but they don't appear to be compatible: when I turn the computer on, it doesn't display anything, and after a few seconds, fans go to max speed! According to the workstation's spec, it supports up to 64GB ECC unbuffered DDR3 1600MHz for my CPU. My questions: Does this memory (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) have ECC? The Corsair spec doesn't say.Is it possible that my system only allows ECC memory and doesn't work with non-ECC memories? Is this memory unbuffered? I'm under the impression that most consumer memories are unbuffered. Is there such a thing as "quad-channel" memory? Could this be my issue?! Thank you for your help
Administrators Technobeard Posted November 26, 2013 Administrators Share Posted November 26, 2013 1. All of our current memory is non-ECC. 2. That's correct, your system will only work with ECC memory. 3. Yes. 4. Memory isn't one channel or two or four, but it is tested in those configurations. Having said that, it's never recommend to mix memory kits like you're doing. It's best to purchase one kit that meets your needs that's compatible. I'd recommend returning the memory and talking with HP to find compatible memory.

Regarding #4, are you saying that purchasing 4 identical 2x4GB kits is risky? I.e. if I need 8 DIMMS, would I need to find a single kit containing 8 DIMMS? I don't think I've seen such kits yet. Administrators Technobeard Posted November 26, 2013 Administrators Share Posted November 26, 2013 Correct, mixing memory is not recommended. There are some 8 stick kits out there, but if you only want/need 32 GB, their manual shows you can use a 4x8GB kit. Again, it's best to talk to HP regarding which memory they recommend for their system.
