Thorax
Hi, I had a Corsair HX1000 that had worked flawlessly for over 1,5 years that suddenly short-circuited when I plugged in a new Asus Xonar Essence STX using one of the 4-pin molex cables that came with the PSU. It killed not only the new soundcard, but also my motherboard - an Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3. I'm not 100% that the PSU itself isn't functional, but as I could smell burnt plastic from inside right after the incident (and from the soundcard) I never did dare to try as I really did not feel like losing more components. So yeah, that sucked, but as I really needed to use my home PC this weekend/coming weeks/months for photoshop, 3dsmax and gaming I couldn't wait months for a RMA I had to go and buy a new PSU + motherboard..... As I felt that my old HX1000 had been reliable before it died on me, I went and bought the new HX1050 and a new Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe motherboard. Fortunately, my 6 harddrives, RAM, 2 gpus and cpu had survived and installing everything was a breeze. However, as I soon noticed after starting a simple render or just loading up a game for a few minutes, the fan of the HX1050 became extremely loud...I mean, REALLY loud even for me, and that is with a case that already has 7 fans installed + 4 fans for GPUs - all in balanced mode. The problem only occurs when my GPUs have to work a little, it does NOT occur if I say, run prime95 for a hour or so... maybe it's connected to the heat coming from the fans of the GPUs, but that wasn't a problem with my previous PSU. It's fine as long as the fan isn't spinning or when I'm not doing anything in particular with the PC, but I can't focus even with headphones on when it starts as I can still hear the noise. I doubt it's the ambient temp of my PC as my harddrives are between 22-28c, motherboard at 24-28, GPUs at 35-40 on idle, 50-55 on load. (2x780 in SLI) At this point the PC is really hard to sit and work with and I don't really feel like going out and buying a closed-headset just to be able to load up a render for a few minutes... I don't understand why the HX1000 was so great and super-quiet even during load and the HX1050 isn't at all....even if it goes by temperature it shouldn't be that warm inside my case - I even tried removing one of the graphics cards and it still became very loud at around 50% load. See below link to soundcloud to hear what I'm referring to -- this is at 50-55% load with all other fans at medium/high - you can still hear the HX1050 as it is louder than everything else. It starts before I push my GPUs a little and around the 1:14: mark it begins loading about 50%, and you can clearly hear the difference.. It was recorded with my phone, but the quality is good enough just to demonstrate the issue. https://soundcloud.com/tentorax/hx1050-fan-noise#t=1:00 What should I do? My patience is wearing thin and you can't buy HX1000's anymore.. I couldn't find anything on how to control the fan speed so I suppose the product doesn't allow it. As for the bricked hardware my retailer referred me to you, but I haven't contacted Asus yet so I guess I will find out soon enough who will reimburse me for the cost of the motherboard, PSU and soundcard that are now unusable. I'm starting to reconsider my good faith in the quality of Corsair products as a result of this week's unfortunate chain of events. Keeping in mind that I also purchased a Corsair H80i a few weeks ago that is unable to keep a stock i7 below 35c on idle doesn't help either....however that is unrelated to this particular issue. I'd appreciate any assistance/advice.
peanutz94
I'm really sorry to hear this. .Do you still have the old MB and PSU? If so I would open up an RMA for that PSU and also request a damage claim for so you can recoup some of your loss. As far as the second PSU is concerned, it sounds as if you just got a bad unit. Since it is brand new it would be best to return it to your resellers for an exchange. If they can not or will not help you then please submit a ticket for that PSU as well. Advanced replacements are also available if you would like one. That way you can continue to use one until the new PSU arrives. .
Thorax
I've checked with my retailer and they want to test the HX1050 and the soundcard before replacing them for me. I suppose it's faster that way than sending PSUs back and forth, but it's unlikely I'll be able to use the PC for a few days. :( Not much I can do about it though. As for the old motherboard and PSU I guess I'll follow your advice and do a RMA and see where it leads. However, won't I just receive a replacement PSU? Will I have to send the motherboard along with the PSU to Corsair or should I contact Asus separately? Thanks again!

You would need to send both to Corsair and then they would send you a new PSU and compensate the board monetarily, if they find it to be bad and the PSU was the cause. joejoe69
It's not just a "bad unit". Every HX Gold PSU I've had always sounded like that. I've owned an HX850, RMA'd it and the new one sounded the same. I sold the new PSU and bought an HX1050 because of my upgraded components. Sounded just like the HX850 Gold's I had prior: quiet at idle but fire up a GPU intensive program and it's screams like a jet engine in a test cell. My system has a custom water cooling system with SP120s on 7V and it sounds as if the GPUs are back on air. I just quit trying and lived with it. Now how likely is it for someone to have 3 "bad units" in a row?
Thorax
Update: It was in fact a bad unit in this case as the previous one sounded like a jet engine. I received a new HX1050 from my retailer (though it took 2 weeks.. yay...) and the noise is nowhere near the levels they were before. But as you say, this series still seems a bit too loud.. I miss my HX1000.... In any case, thanks for the responses and advice - I appreciate it!
