Should my AX750 be RMA'd?

Hey all, let me just start by saying I'm glad to become a member of this forum.

I've been having some issues with my PC as of lately, but it is only while gaming. My computer will randomly shut off, then after a few seconds it will restart. There is no artifacts on screen, no BSOD, no warnings, no stuttering/drop in fps, no freezing, just instant power loss.

I know that this particular PSU's fan will not spin unless under load, but I haven't ever heard the PSU come on (my rig is loud anyways) and I haven't ever felt any air moving from it. There is plenty of ventilation on the bottom of my case and the back (raised open platform) so I don't believe heat is an issue unless the fans aren't spinning.

The only game I have had this issue with as of now is Battlefield 4. I know it's an extremely demanding game, and maybe that's pushing the PSU over the limit? I figured the AX750 would suit my needs for my build (2x 670OC SLI, 2500k @ 4.5GHz, full specs in profile).

So the question is, am I trying to squeeze too much out of this PSU and I need to upgrade, or should I consider getting a RMA on the product?

Voltages:

+12V: 12.288V

+5V: 5.040V

+3.3V: 3.376V

If you need any more info, please feel free to ask. I will check this post periodically throughout the day.

Thank you!

Thanks for the reply! Video drivers are definitely up to date, I always download the newest ones as soon as they release.

I haven't had this issue with any other game so far, so I'm not sure it's GPU related. Would a GPU really cause a PC to shut off and turn back on? I'm running two MSI 670 OC/PE in SLI, both temperatures are fine: they never get above 55-60C at 100% load for hours. Also been running these two GPUs for months.

Both GPUs are stock overclocked. I haven't tuned them in any form or fashion.

The only thing that's OC'd by me is my CPU. I will check the BIOS as far as the unstable overclock goes, but I've been running this exact OC for months without issue or heat problems with this exact PSU, so I'm not sure that's the issue.

What steps can I take to test my hardware? Run Burntest for a few passes and see what happens, then do a GPU benchmark and see what happens?

FOLLOW UP: I ran Intel Burntest for 35 passes successfully, CPU cores never got above 70C, PSU got warm but not too hot to touch. I don't think the fan came on at all, (I didn't feel any airflow coming out of it) although I'm not sure how much force the fans typically have.

I would check Nvidias forums.

Absolutly it could. Also a failing PSU isn't going to just fail in one game.

That doesn't mean that one of them isn't or failing now though. But I'm really betting this is a driver issue.

Understand. But OC's can degrade over time becoming unstable. I'm in no way saying this is the issue, but if you wanted to test that theory, drop your OC back a little and see what happens to your restarts.

I really don't think thats the real issue. Just something to check.

You could. But i would roll back video drivers first and see what happens.

All in all I don't see anything at all that says your PSU is the culprit.

Ok, what you're suggesting is starting to make sense. I ran the Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 twice at the highest settings, and each time I had a hang that made the display turn off and then after a few seconds it would turn back on and the benchmark would resume. MSI Afterburner reported some strange numbers:

The max power on both cards reads as 34927872 and 34928032.

Also the usage on both cards reads as 4294967296.

These are quite ridiculous numbers and surely show something is amiss.

The only big difference I'm seeing is on the memory usage:

GPU 1 is reading as max memory usage of 961MB. GPU 2 is reading as max memory usage of 4194304MB.

I will remove the second GPU, run the benchmark again, and see how it goes. Then I'll put the second one in and remove the first and see how that goes. It seems that perhaps my second GPU is faulty by these numbers? Or is it just the drivers?

Anyone have any wisdom on this?

Thanks!

  • 3 weeks later...

Haven't had this issue since my last post on 11-13-2013. Thought I would come back and report how I fixed this issue in case anyone in the future stumbles upon this post through a Google search:

Swapped slots with my graphics cards, reinstalled drivers. I've updated drivers twice since then, and since haven't had any issues.

Thanks for the advice peanutz!
