HX850 audible buzzing

Hey guys,

I've had this PSU almost 2 years now and it's been great since. I turned my computer on the other day and heard a strange buzzing sound. I disregarded it for a few days, but it has gotten to a point where I have to adress it.

I narrowed the noise down to the PSU, so after I turned off my computer, I flipped the switch on the back to off. The sound is faint, but still there. I disconnect the cord, then it's gone. I tried plugging it into a different outlet, and still get the same noise.

It sounds exactly like a buzzing wire, only that it's really loud. Don't know what this could mean, but should I RMA?

I know am I receiving the exact same model, but is it refurbished or new? I bet Corsair needs me to send all the cables back too, but that's such a pain because everything is cable tied so neat, so could I just send back the cables that came with the RMA (I'm doing express RMA so I'll get it first). The problem is definitely the PSU itself, not the cable.

Oh, and I suppose the biggest question is, should I not use the computer? Not sure if this is a sign of PSU failure, but after a turn off my computer, my speakers make this really weird almost 8-bit sounding noise. I have a sound card and it never has done that before.

Thank you!

Hi, I also have issues with my Corsair Professional HX850W but it is NEW, I am having this wierd buzzing sound also even when the computer is not started, i tried unpluging and repluging the motherboard and components and it is still doing this anyway. I am a bit tired since I recieved my new computer 1 week ago I am having nonstop issues with my corsair products and I had to troubleshoot everything to make it work nothing worked perfectly right off the bat, my H80i was doing a rattling noise, and so on.

Here is a sound that I recorded of my NEW PSU

See the attachment below, apav, is it the exact same sound?

While Corsair does have the right to send you refurbished unit, 99% of them are brand new units. And sorry, yes, you'll need to send all the cables along with the PSU. You'll get a brand new set with the replacement PSU.

May not be a bad idea. If you want or interested , you can ask for an advanced replacement so you are only down a couple of days.

@Delbane, Since your unit is new it would be best to return it to your resellers first for a replacement..

I did not have this noise issue the first couple days but then I have it so this is why I don't think it's because of my hardware. Everything is new and the noise just started today and I did not make any changes to anything, I tried the graphic test to see but it's not related since the noise is not changing when my cards are under load, it is also doing the sound when my computer is not even started as you can see in the sound that i shared, do you think it still can be related to some of my hardware even if it's doing the sound when my computer is not started?

thanks for your quick reply

Hey guys, reporting back. The sound goes away but then comes back. A friend told me that dust could be causing something to short, which is why it's making that noise. If cleaning doesnt fix it then should I RMA?

Also, I have to ask for more details on a question I asked earlier. I know some of you answered yes I have to take my cables out and ship it back with the PSU, but I'm very opposed to that. It would take me a while to get all of them out, undoing all my hours of hard work of getting them neat. I will if I absolutely have to, but that's why I'm wondering if I can ship back the cables that came with the replacement PSU. I can guarantee it isn't the cables, so if they just care about getting the same exact contents back, should it matter?

Dust isn't going to cause coil whine or a short. It's not conductive.

I'm sorry, but that is their policy. You'll need to send in all your cables.

I see. Well didn't hurt to ask. Thank you.

I'm almost certain it isn't coil whine though. Doesn't sound like it. I read the noisy psu sticky, none of those steps worked. The buzzing noise comes on and goes away. When it comes back, even if I switch the power off on the back of the PSU, it still makes a faint buzz (although quieter, it's still noticeable). The noise will go away when I pull the cord out of the PSU, but it comes back after I plug it back in. The only way to "fix" the noise is to leave the computer off for a while.

No sound now, but I'm sure if I play a game for a little while it will come back and not go away until I shut the computer off and leave it off for a while.
