Bedo
My specs: MB Asus Gene II (RAM triple channel) Intel i7 920 (first gen) Installed RAM: CMG6GX3M3A2000C8 (3 x 2 GB triple channel memory @ 2000 MHz 8-8-8-24) I would like to install 6 GB (3 x 2 GB) of additional memory for a total of 12 GB. However I'm not able to find this ram anymore! I only found this version of 3 x 4 GB on RAM with different latency: CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 (9-10-9-27 latency). So my questions are: 1) Where can I buy my original RAM? 2) Is this second RAM compatible with the first one? 3) What should you suggest to upgrade my RAM? Thank you
peanutz94
1) Where can I buy my original RAM? Unless you can find it used somewhere or a shop with old stock somewhere , you can't . That number is no longer in production. 2) Is this second RAM compatible with the first one? There is absolutely no way of telling how any two random kits would play with each other even if they were two sets of the exact same part number. If you choose to do so , you do at your own risk. If your wanting to upgrade it really would be best to get a single matched 12 gig kit. You should always replace , never add.
Bedo
Thank you. I think I will buy the 12GB kit and try with both (18GB). In case of problems I will use just the 12 GB kit. By the way, is this 12 GB kit compatible with my MB? What about performance of this 12 GB kit? With those latencies is it slower than my old kit? Thank you again
peanutz94
Yes, it's compatible and no you would not notice any difference in performance between the two kits. However, since they both have different requirements and different latencies, I wouldn't mix them.
Bedo
Ok, thank you, I will buy that kit. Why shouldn't I try to mix the 2 kit? The problem is that I might have an unstable system (with freezes) or there is the possibility to damage components? By the way my MB have 6 RAM slots (2 x triple channels). Why did they placed 6 slots if I cannot insert even the same model of RAM kit? Thank you
peanutz94
Why shouldn't I try to mix the 2 kit? The problem is that I might have an unstable system (with freezes) Yes, Also Corsair does not suggest or support mixing kits even if they are the same part numbers. There is just no way to tell how any two random kits are going to act when placed on the same board. So if this doesn't work there really isn't much Corsair can do. By the way my MB have 6 RAM slots (2 x triple channels). Why did they placed 6 slots if I cannot insert even the same model of RAM kit? For matched 12 and 24 gig kits. 6x2gig and 6x4gig. Just like the one I use in my system.;): CMP24GX3M6A1600C9
Bedo
Ok thank you but my main question is: could I damage my hardware mixing the 2 ram kit or just having software/freeze problems?
peanutz94
No, you cant really damage any of your hardware.
