Memory for DYI Build

CORBeth

Recommended Posts

First, I did check with the compatibility program on this site, and it did not give me options for a dyi build. This is my first self build, so patience please.

I'd like to get 16gb Vengeance, preferably using 8x2.

The processor is I5 4670.

MoBo is Asus Z97-A

I'll be going with 1600mhz because that is what is best supported by the cpu.

This system will not be overclocked.

Your help is appreciated.

Ok, I'm confused. I was thinking that memory also needed to match with both Mobo and cpu. I could not seem to match that using Intel's Compatible Memory data sheet.

Using the info you provided, would these be compatible for my DYI? My goal is to possibly expand in the future to 32gb, adding and additional 8x2 memory in the future rather then having to replace all.

Vengeance series:

CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10R

CMZ16GX3M2A1600C9G

The only Corsair Vengeance 16gb on the Intel data sheet is 4x4

CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9

Thanks!

it does and it is. QVL or vendors lists are never updated. They only test a few kits that are available at the time.

But to answer your question, both kits would be perfectly compatible. And yes, I would go with a 2x8 kit . The newer MB's since the launch of the second generation Intel CPU's run better with the 8 gig modules..

2 sticks is less strain on your memory controller.

Just keep in mind that this is a practice that is not suggested or supported by Corsiar. Two kits even with identical part numbers can be incompatible with each other. Best to just get a 32 gig kit now if you are even thinking about upgrading at a later date.

Thanks for the info. Why exactly is it possibly not compatible if bought at separate time?

Build of materials change all the time. Modules end up getting built with different chips as they become available/obsolete or there is a vendor change. So even though the part number is the same it could be completely different memory under the hood!

They still dont suggest it even if two kits are bought at the same time. Unless all the memory comes from one single tested package there is no way to guarantee that the memory will run at rated speeds if at all when purchased that way.
