NimRock
Hi guys, I have a new build with an H80i, apart from some temp issues which I resolved in another thread it's been going along ok for about a week. However yesterday my H80i started doing something odd. When the computer starts up the pump is making a loud grinding sound. I though at first a wire had come loose and was clicking against one of my fans. Also the light on the pump has gone from default to pulsing red. Restarting the computer straight away fixes the problem, it only happens when the comp is cold/has been off for a few hours. The first time it happened my LED strip had fallen down, and pulled the molex out of one of my case fans, so I don't know if that is relevant or not. I have not connected the usb cable at all yet, it's all just running on default. Help!?! I really don't want to have to go though RMAing it :*(
NimRock
Oh and my rad is mounted upside down. As in pipes go in and out the top, it doesn't fit the other way in my case. I could put it on the roof though if that would help.

I have not connected the usb cable at all yet, it's all just running on default. Instal the USB cable and the CorsairLink software. That should fix the LED issue Once CL is installed check to see what FW the cooler has and post that here too please. Do not try to update this yet! Does the pump quiet down after the machine is on for a few minutes?
NimRock
Does the pump quiet down after the machine is on for a few minutes? Yep, after about 30 seconds. The problem has stopped happening again. When it reoccurs I'll install the cable and update.
moisiss
Sounds like what is going on with my H100i... somewhere a signal is not being sent or received on cold starts and the pump is only going at ~600-700 rpm so it makes that noise. Once the it "wakes up" and the pump goes up to full speed (~2300rpm) the noise goes away. Mine has also done the thing where it just randomly stops sending the right LED message on startup and just pulses red... this has happened to me twice in the week that I have owned the H100i. The first time it happened I thought the thing had blown up.. haha. But I guess it's just some software glitch. If you have a program that can tell you fan speeds on your comp (I use Easytune that came with my gigabyte motherboard and Corsair link2) you can confirm that this is what's happening. The next time it makes the noise look at your cpu fan speed (or pump speed in Corsair Link2).. mine always says ~650-700 rpm when it is making the noise. When it doesn't make the noise it says that the cpu fan speed is ~2300 rpm (~2200 in Corsair Link2). I also double checked this by stress testing while the noise is happening and comparing temps to the non noisy pump stress test temps. As you would expect, the temps are higher when it is making the noise... indicating that my fan speed software is correct and not giving me a false reading... i.e. the pump is actually running slower when the noise is happening. These results are reproducible in my rig and always show the same results... noise = lower pump speed and higher temps. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that info, that does sound like it's related to what I'm experiencing, the noise only happens on start up, and the noise always stops right when windows comes up. Did you RMA your H100i/find a fix in the end or are you just putting up with it? However once it's happened the pulsing red does not go away till I restart. I did try moving the rad to the front so I could mount it side on instead of upside down, my case (350D does not allow it to be mounted the way it is intended to be, and I can't mount it in the top it turns out without hitting the RAM sockets on my MOBO. But as it turns out no orientation of the rad seems to help so it's probably not air bubbles I guess, or it's go so much air in the loop the orientation doesn't matter. On a side note, moving from a rear location for the rad, on an outlet fan, to a front location on inlet dropped my CPU maybe 15C, and my GPU by about 5C as well for some reason!! I'm trying the link software now to see if that helps.

Does the pump quiet down after the machine is on for a few minutes? I'm not sure which is the firmware number The Corsair hydro USB is 2.0.0 The Corsair H80i is version 1.0.5, I assume this one is the one you mean? mokurai
I have the exact same issue with my Corsair H100i that I bought just over a week ago. The grinding noise does not occur if I set the LED to white. That is until it forgets the setting and starts blinking red and making that grinding noise again. Can RAM GUY tell us if it will be fixed in a future firmware update? I have currently version 1.0.5 , version 1.0.7 changed the LED colour to pink instead of red and that was it. I have 2 noctua NF-F12's installed and I'm sure the fans are not making that noise. In fact they're all plugged to the motherboard fan headers and are not spinning at all until high cpu load (Asus Fan Expert 2).
