Hi my fellow casemodders...it's Kier again

It's time for a new build with the beautiful Corsair Carbide Air 540.

Saw this case for the first time at some pictures from Computex 2013. And think it has a lot of potential

A good looking case with numerous possibilities for air cooling and watercooling ofcourse.

Time to think of some nice ideas and cut it in pieces.

Still have some hardware laying around for this build, which of course may change in the future of the build.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/ekwb.jpg

First post wasn't much about modding, so time for a little modding UPDATE!!!

This time i'm gonna cut the case in half ;)

First job...place some nice Xigmatek xof-f1251 fans. Btw. The color combination will be black/ grey and white.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03613.jpg

First, see how it looks

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03624.jpg

A bit "normal". So other idea then, but first disassembling the case .

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03627.jpg

Once stripped, this is whats left.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03629.jpg

Marked the size of 3 Xigmatek fans on top

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03638.jpg

Time to do the first cut.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03642.jpg

Cut 2 strips to the right size and cut/ file some fan shapes

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03657.jpg

Mounted and tried to get the same height as the original plastic covers

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03653.jpg

Placed a 240 rad beneath it. 1 fan is for the show, much better looking then 2 on top and three in the front

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03659.jpg

Both rads placed like this

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03666.jpg

Again same heights as the plastic covers

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03693.jpg

And front

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03696.jpg

Cut a acrylic plate and made 3 fanholes in it

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03722.jpg

And again for the front

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03726.jpg

Cut 5mm on both sides to get a nice opening between the acrylic and plastic

Glued a angled piece between (with ACRIFIX 192)

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03730.jpg

And here it is...the new cover

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03746.jpg

First pasted white vinyl on it to get a better light distribution from some LED strips

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03764.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03748.jpg

Placed some white LED strips and a line of frosted acrylic on both sides.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03850.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03848.jpg

After this pasted another layer of vinyl, but this time black and put some power on the strips

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03768.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03777.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03773.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC038351.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03833.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03839.jpg

Hmm, stupid me...have a lot of RGB strips and controllers laying around.

So removed the white strips and placed RGB.

Dont think i'm gonna use the different colors a lot, but it's funny so why not?

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03852.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03853.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03854.jpg

Dim the white lights

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03855.jpg

And full power

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c2/DSC03856.jpg

finally... a nice movie

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/ekwb.jpg

Update!!!

External is almost finished.... So let's go inside

What I did:

Cut a acrylic midplate, and a acrylic mobo tray cut out with the dimensions of what remains after placing the mobo.

Cut/ placed 2x angled aluminum strips which are bent. Placed at the side from the vertical radiator and front midplate.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03865.jpg

I also placed an acrylic pipe at each radiator which later become linked.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03866.jpg

Height midplate is sufficient to do some installation work beneath it.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03869.jpg

Attempt number 1 in terms of the tube routing (off course straight forward)

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03870.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03874.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03885.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03887.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03889.jpg

Nice ... but not quite the thing i'm looking for. So change of plans:

GPUs in-and outlets all down and later.... in-and outlet CPU up

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03902.jpg

With C47 adapters

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03890.jpg

Made all covers and midplate black again

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03892.jpg

Only need to think/ make a nice cover for the horizontal rad

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03894.jpg

Connect the GPUs

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03906.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03907.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03912.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03916.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03919.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03923.jpg

Underneath the case I have some space to connect everything (needs to be nicely finished) Rads (right) connected and has a drain port.

Furthermore GPU1 GPU2 coupled and the other in-and outlet with high flow fittings / flex tubes going to the right side of the case.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03940.jpg

And screwed an acrylic plate against it.

CPU / outlet goes up and used some 90 degrees Rotery's to let it go to the right compartment

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03949.jpg

Looks quite clean allready

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03955.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03959.jpg

The CPU connection comes out here and using fillports

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03970.jpg

As for the reservoir.... I have found a old EK Bayres. Made a new frontplate, this time without EK logo

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03935.jpg

And placed a MCP355 pump at the back

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c3/DSC03966.jpg

And two pics of the beautiful fans and nostalgic bayreservoir

[/img]

Looks good mate... love the way you placed the rads ;):

WOW! Super job Dude. Looks beautiful. You did a great job, very clean. Positive pressure to the max huh? You might have to dust it out every week but well worth it.

thanks, yeh dust will be a problem. Maybe a nice idea to design some filters which can be placed in this setup

Update!!!

Also this build continues;) it's been a while since I've updated because of other little projects

But ...... here it is.

Been busy with the other side. For this I placed the in/ outlet from the GPUs like this... going up!!

Fits nicely along the PSU.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c4/DSC04519.jpg

And after some pushing and measuring with the adapters: Right goes to the CPU and comes back to the Res, and placed a nice little fill port. Left goes from pump outlet to the GPUs

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c4/DSC04511.jpg

My new little fillport.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c4/DSC04530.jpg

The whole thing.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c4/DSC04525.jpg

Then it was time for the sleeving part. I have used black and 4 different types gray.

After letting it run for a while, it seems to appears to have no leakage ;)

My good CNC mate Pascal (thanks man) had a nice RGB controller which can dim the RGB LEDs very nicely. This gives a very cool effect when spinning the fans. Also placed another RGB strip internally.

Placed it

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c6/DSC06176.jpg

Cables "formed" a bit allready. This time I did not apply sleeve because the black wires looks very good as it is now.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c6/DSC06172.jpg

Expanded the cover of the SSDs slightly to get a better appearance, so created a window for the part with the pump.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c6/DSC06225.jpg

Placed 1 RGB strip above the SSDs

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c6/DSC06237.jpg

And the other side with the black cables

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c6/DSC06246.jpg

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx233/kier1976/NEW/Carbide/c6/DSC06239.jpg

Tried to place everything as "clean" as possible and think it worked :)

Now testing, and ... the final photo shoot.

keir

are you serious?

id actually planned on mounting a couple of ssd's above my psu,i thought i had a mental patent on this but guess i forgot to register it:D:

actually down the line i plan on relocating my ssd cage and adding a sheet of uv blue acrylic against the m/b to house a couple of ssd's,so our schemes wont be exactly identical.;):

of course thats further down the line as right now im focusing on complimenting the main side for now.

so much for hi-jacking your build with my rambling but your build has really given me alot of insight on the 540,i must say tho its hard to deviate from your scheme as yours has a look of perfection thats impossible to match.

your gonna like the 860i psu,i have one that takes everything i throw at it and still remains dead quiet.

keep up with such a fantastic and inspiring build..

Lol thanks wytnyt,

You forgot to sign the document mate ;) so this was my chance :)

Think the 540 is a great case for modding, and had a lot of fun doing this.

I choose the 860i because I dont have much space for bigger PSUs because of the vertical acrylic tubes... but I'm really glad I choosen this one. Great little big PSU.

Wow, this looks incredible. Great attention to detail, and I particularly liked the fact that you took pictures of the case before you began. After seeing the modding potential for this case I ordered one for my next build. Guess you just made a sale for Corsair haha.
