venomsst
Hello, I purchased a custom built pc a couple of days ago from a well known UK supplier. After powering it up I noticed there was a constant "woodpecker" noise. Upon further inspection I noticed it was coming from the PSU and after googling it I found that some other people have experienced this same problem. I will include a link to a youtube video which wasnt made by me which shows my exact problem: As you can hear from the video it is extremely annoying and can be heard over the rest of the PC fans. Surely this isn't normal? It makes me want to wear my headset all the time and turn the desk fan on if I am not wearing them so I can drown it out. venomsst
It is being collected tomorrow to see if there is a problem but I would rather not send it and have them say the noise is normal and pay a small fortune to have it returned. So if anyone could help before 9am GMT that would be great as that's when it's being collected.
peanutz94
Venmosst, if you would like Corsair to replace it , just use the link on the left to request an RMA. They will just replace it no matter what. They would rather give you a new unit than take the chance on multiple RMA's. Or you always have the option to send it off to your supplier. venomsst
The supplier requested I return the whole PC which they are collecting which I was happy with before I found out I will be charged £42 if they think it's working as intended. Having just spent just over £1000 and destroying my bank balance I really cannot afford to pay that if it turns out this sound is normal. That is why I thought I'd ask here first to see if it's worth returning it. I love the PC apart from that awful noise.
peanutz94
The noise is not normal. Since the unit is less than 30 days old, Corsair will pick up the shipping costs if you call CS and ask them. I just don't understand why they are making you pay to send back a couple of day old system. i would push for them to cover it.
venomsst
They are picking up for free but if they decide the noise isn't a big deal then I would have to then pay the collection and redelivery costs. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't normal before I let them collect it. The noise stops when the fan actually spins briefly every now and then but when it's idle the woodpecker attacks. I invited two people into my room to listen and they agreed it would drive them crazy too.
peanutz94
It does happen from time to time. I personally don't know the cause of it, but can tell you it comes from the fan controller and why it stops when the fan starts . If they give you any trouble over it you can point them to this thread. I'm sure one of the Corsair employees would chime in if they need it. venomsst
I decided to make my own video of the problem. Please turn your volume all the way up as my phone is rubbish. I first put the phone to the top of my corsair case and then put it around the back down the bottom where my corsair gs600 is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suhEOkWPcQs The noise is constant even when im just sat on the desktop doing nothing. It only stops for about 3 seconds when the fan decides to spin once every few minutes so basically the noise happens 99% of the time. I decided to cancel the RMA to my supplier as I turned it on this morning and the noise had gone for about 20 minutes so I called to cancel and then 5 minutes after the call the noise was back. It has now been back for an hour straight. After viewing my own video do you think this is normal? It's not the loudest sound in the world but it's the loudest noise coming from my PC and it's VERY irritating. When the fan spins for a few seconds it's fine as it's a nice constant fan sound but this woodpecker like sound which is a stop start repetitive sound is driving me nuts. I have never had a problem with my old tx750 and usually buy corsair parts for every pc I own hence the GS600, Corsair carbide case and the Corsair vengeance RAM in this current build. I am just a bit confused as I have read online on various help forums that this noise is considered normal. That is why I thought I would double check and post my own video to see if you guys think it's normal. I hope it isn't as it's the most annoying PSU I have ever owned lol and I bought it because it's not supposed to make a lot of noise when idle. Thanks for any help any of you can offer.
