tomasj
Hi There, So I am having some issues with my cooling node. Commander 2 Unit Cooling Node 2x2 SP120 Performance Edition - on Sivlerstone Fan splitters ( I tested it without them and I haven't exceeded the max amperage for the node) 1x AF120 Performance Edition 1x AF140 Quiet Edition I bought the loud performance fans figuring I'd be able to balance cooling and performance to my liking, cuz it's loud as all hell when they are all going full bore. At first I couldn't even get the cooling node to show up in the link software (2.3.4168) So I updated the firmware on the commander unit (2.0.6) and it showed up, yay. I went to adjust the fan speed on the fans and I was only able to change it from 2200rpm to about 1900rpm(still loud). Figured it might be the splitters, so I removed them, still only a 300 rpm change... So then I tried an old analogue fan controller and was able to bring all the fans down to a whisper. So I figured I'd try the link system again, so I tried to update the firmware on the cooling node but it wasn't showing up in the update firmware drop down menu. So I disconnected all the fans from it and still noting, tried the commander on every USB header on my MOBO, tried all the connectors on the back of the commander, check that I had the latest bios... still noting. So after some digging I tried a few different versions of the Link Software but with the same result... from the beta (2.4.4948) all the way back to 2.1.1 Not sure what to do now. I bought all Corsair products figuring that Corsair fans would work with the Corsair fan control system. Any suggestions? Any combinations of software and firmware I could try. Please help me tame this beast. cheers, t
tomasj
So I got the firmware on the cooling node to update to 1.2.5 and I can control the fans, yay. However, the is a ticking noise all the time get more frequent when i turn down the speed... sigh. Is this problem on the PWM series of fans? Would I be able to exchange/RMA the fans for the PWM versions? They are still new just installed them yesterday. cheers, t

tomasj
I got to switch my SP120 for the new PWM fans and got them yesterday :) That's good to hear, how did you initiate the process? Please let me know if the PWM fans don't click. Are all of your 3-pin fans ticking/clicking? Is your Corsair AF140 fan clicking/ticking? Yes my AF120 and AF140 are clicking, with firmware 1.2.5. Couldn't slow them down at all with the stock firmware. I think it's awesome that Corsair is trying to get 3rd party fans working on the cooling nodes however I think it's odd that they wouldn't focus on their products working seamless together first and foremost. wytnyt
I think it's odd that they wouldn't focus on their products working seamless together first and foremost. thats just it,they did focus on working correctly.the problems seen here are just the exception due to areas unable to test for overall users. tastyhouse
I disagree - using corsair link with fans bundled with their hydro series coolers is a very common scenario. There is no reason these fans should be giving users problems, its not an exception - there are a lot of users having the problem, myself included. wytnyt
you dont understand the concept of the link system,it isnt only about fans, thats just the tip of the iceberg as far as controlling, its also being able to integrate this software into every type of application and configuration possible
tomasj
I opened a ticket on Friday to replace the fans with the PWM versions. Which I was told but customer service when I called that it was the only course of action that would solve the ticking problem. So now it's gonna cost me money to send them back, I paid a premium for these fans, there are fan with very similar specs for less. On top of all this I still have yet to hear anything back from customer service on my RMA...

tomasj
not sure what to do... I've had a ticket open for 3 business days now and I am not getting an RMA number. when I call I get put on hold for 10min or so then i end up at a customer service mailbox, that's always full... (see this thread: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=119091) Are all of your 3-pin fans ticking/clicking? Is your Corsair AF140 fan clicking/ticking? The fan speed and clicking issue is discussed in the "Corsair Link Frequently Asked Questions" thread. Q: Why don’t my Corsair AF or SP series fans (or other 3rd party fans) change speeds in Corsair Link? A: Corsair Link H80i and H100i, and the Cooling Node, currently use a PWM signal to control fan speeds. This works by modulating the +12V electrical pulse width at certain frequencies to change fan RPM. With non-PWM fans such as the AF120 or SP120, the PWM signal is too frequent for the fan to adjust appropriately. If we adjusted that PWM signal frequency, the fans could be slowed down but the motors of 3rd Party DC fans are likely to make significant “clicking” or “ticking” noises. As such, we highly recommend using PWM fans with current Corsair Link fan control methods. Corsair Link and the Cooling Node, use a PWM signal to control fan speeds by modulating the +12V electrical pulse width at certain frequencies to change fan RPM. With non-PWM fans such as the AF120 or SP120, or any other standard fan, the speed can be slowed down but the motors of any non PWM compatable fans are likely to make significant “clicking” or “ticking” noises. This is why Corsair highly recommend using PWM fans with current Corsair Link fan control methods. So the issue isn't the fans themselves but how the link unit controls the speeds, this is going to happen with any non PWM capable fan that you have, corsair product or ortherwise. hope that helps
