Kernel-Power Event 41

I am looking for some direction here how to deal with this error.

I build my computer a year ago and first used Windows 7 Pro 64-bits without any issues. Since January 2013 I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro 64-bits and installed the OS on a SDD.

After a few months suddenly the computer turned of randomly it seemed. When I looked at my log I noticed that the error occurred before but have not noticed it.

In the mean time I tried:

- took parts out and placed them back, checked wiring.

- turned off services

- reinstalled OS and noticed that the error occurred again pretty fast after installing basic drivers.

- tested the corsair memory with memtest and tested Ok

I have a quad channel configuration and noticed that if I use 1-3 modules that the computer does not reboot and can continue using my computer. In these cases the computer does not run in quad channel. I did however notice that the error was still produced with 1-3 mods but with no reboot.

The additional information I get in the log now without reboot is:

SleepInProgress 6

BootAppStatus 3221226513

When I used 4 mods in quad channel the error/reboot occurred when:

- browsing with chrome

- browsing with Firefox

- loading maps of the game Battlefield 3; sometimes I could play the first map and then it would reboot when the second map loaded

Hope for some recognition/direction, thanks!

That error is just a generic error meaning that the sysytem lost power or didn't shut down corectly

Have you checked for any BIOS updates?

I'm wondering if your MB isn't bad or you have a bad slot. I would remove all memory and test a single stick in the first slot. If that module tests good, then use it to test the other slots in the same fashion.

This could also be a PSU issue too, so it might be worth checking the voltages being reported by the BIOS.

Thanks for your reply, yes I performed 2 BIOS updates in the meantime.

Also a bad slot crossed my mind but I already ruled that out when I tested with 1-3 modules in different slots.

The voltages reported are fine.

I did find a post of someone with a simular issue and he cleared the CMOS and that solved his issue. At the moment I also cleared CMOS and it looks promissing altho it's

a bit soon to be sure. If it works out then I will make a new post.

After 5 days of stability my PC rebooted again with event 41. Connecting to a specific Battlefield 3 server resulted in this error while loading the map. Some servers seem more likely for this error to occur then others.

Samsung Magician showed there was a firmware update available for the SSD, thats the next to check out.

After firmware update, another event 41 while connected to Battlefield server.

Well normally its a very random error and hard to repeat but most chance is when loading a map of Battlefield 3. I also had the error during browsing with chrome and Firefox but very random.

In the meantime symptoms get worse.

Also with 3, 2 and 1 memory module it will reboot.

Turned CPU Turbo mode off, turned XMP-profile off and back to Auto, and now I can load a map but I notice short freezes ingame. For a moment I was thinking about overheating but all temperatures are fine. CPU has Corsair water cooling and is about 32 degrees Celsius, Mobo few degrees higher. GPU about 41 degrees and may get e bit higher on the load.

Once when a map was loaded there was still stuttering of graphics for about 5 to 10 seconds and then I could join a game. During the game short freezes.

I noticed with 1 memory module now that the mobo showed Q-code 40.

This seems to be a memory-initilization error. I swapped the module, MemOk! and mobo back to AA. Previous module back in, MemOk! and mobo now also back to AA.

Its quiet confusing...

After a reboot sometimes some drivers start a dialog like they have been installed for the first time. E.g. I have a Bigfoot network card and that needs to configure the available bandwidth again, NVIDIA 3D settings are back to default. This happens in some cases of the reboots, not often.

Now I installed all 4 modules back in and notice Q-code 40 at my mobo. Can connect to some servers but there are short freezes in the game.

I do a warm reboot and Q-code is back to AA.

I shut down PC, switch power off, back on, boot PC, Q-code 40.

Cold start final sequence:

A2 - IDE Detect

AE - Legacy boot event

(A0) - IDE initialization is started

40

Warm start final sequence:

A2 - IDE Detect

AE - Legacy boot event

(A0) - IDE initialization is started

AA - Ok

I dont know how and if this relates to the Event 41 tho.

After your last post i really suspect your SSD with the MB coming in a close second i n the line up of suspects.

But you should test the memory with memtest first . Just to be sure the memory is okay. However from your first post details i would give the memory a little extra voltage. Set them to 1.55-1.6v manually and see if you still get the reboot?

I ran memtest86 again but no errors reported

I also ran a video memory test, no errors reported

I ran windows memory check, no errors reported

I now have removed the SSD and replaced it with a raptor HDD and installed Windows 8 with the same drivers. Downloading now BF3 to check that config out.

I will also test your voltage change to 1.55-1.6v, thanks!

Ok, tested with raptor HDD, without primairy SSD, event 41 when loading BF3 map

Tested 1.55 voltage, event 41 when loading BF3 map

Tested 1.6 voltage, event 41 when loading BF3 map

Since SSD is still suspect I realized I still have a secondary cache SSD connected to another Marvell SATA-controller with a 1.5TB HDD. Crucial appeared to have a firmware available and applied that. That looks promising, no event 41 yet.

Its a bit surprising since this is not the primary drive which is used by windows and Battlefield 3. Anyway, lets see how stable this update works.

Not very long, already another event 41.

So now its probably the mobo peanutz? How about the memorycontroller of the cpu?

If I would need to get another mobo would you advice anothe X79 mobo or the new Z87?

I noticed the X79 and third gen Intel are still expensive. The Z87 mobo's seems cheaper,

the fourth gen Intel is about same price as third comparing the i7-3820 and i7-4770.

I would say the memory is okay. But you defiantly have something else that is totally screwy going on.

Really , without taking the board to computer shop for testing the only other way is to change boards and see if you still have the same problems. But that can be time consuming and costly depending on how you go about it.

I'm just trying to cover all bases for you,..the only other thing i can suggest is a clean install of the OS. Especially if you cloned the SSD drive to your rapter for testing purposes.

I really doubt this is memory or memory controller related. While CPU failures do happen they are really pretty rare. So i would count that out as well as a list of potential problems.

Have you checked the voltages being reported in your BIOS from your PSU?

I did a clean install of the OS on my raptor and the voltages reported in BIOS and other diagnostic software are ok.

I know something is going and this error occurs since january and I tried a lot.

I probably will try to get another X79 mobo and swap it.

After testing with Windows 7 installed on my HDD

After diagnostic software

After testing other videocard

it appeared to be ... the PSU

Altho the voltages were correct it seems that this PSU of Antec can have

power failures, power drops and spikes according to a comment I read about this

specific Antec High Current Pro 750watt. He installed a Corsair 750watt and solved. I tested with Antec 550watt and solved.

Never expected this from Antec, I guess Corsair will be my next.
