Madchimp
I recently upgraded the RAM in my Toshiba A660 from the 'stock' 2x 2GB samsung sticks to a single 4GB stick of Vengence DDR3 SODIMM. And it's worked great. Yesterday, I bought another stick, to upgrade to 8G (that the laptop supports) and have had nothing but hassle. With the additional stick in, the system tried to boot into windows, gets as far as the "Starting windows" text (but not the four coloured window logo), and it turns off after sitting there for about 20-30 seconds. I tried with both sticks in either slot, then just the new one in either slot and it keeps failing. Also locks up in memtest after the first test. Put the original stick back in, in either slot, and it works fine. I took that stick back, assuming it was faulty, and swapped it for another stick. The second 'new stick' does exactly the same thing. I have also upgraded the BIOS to the latest version, to no avail. Now, I've noticed the numbers on the sticks vary, and the physical look of the sticks is different too. So, obvisously, you guys have made some changes between the original stick and the new ones. I'm guessing this has caused the newer RAM to not be compatible any more. Are you able to confirm this? If they are different version numbers then yes. And that could also change at any given time . Even if they were the same version Corsair does not suggest or support mixing/combining memory this way. As you have noticed, trying to add memory often causes these types of issues. There is just no way to guarantee compatibility between any two random kits or part numbers, even if they were two of the exact same memory For Corsair to be able to guarantee complete compatibility all your memory must come from one single tested package. It would be best if you returned the 4 gig module for a new single matched 8gig kit This would be a much better choice http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/laptop-memory-upgrades/vengeance-8gb-high-performance-laptop-memory-upgrade-kit-cmsx8gx3m1a1600c10.html.
