CMZ8GX3M4X1600C9 compatability with CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9

My current system has 8GB of RAM, in the form of 4x CMZ8GX3M4X1600C9 in a dual-channel setup.

I've been offered a cheap upgrade, an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an i7, but this is a triple channel board.

Looking for an additional 2x 2GB sticks to bring me to 6x 2GB triple channel and CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9 seems to be the one to go for (same timings, same physical appearance) this is a 2x 2GB kit.

Can anyone confirm this?

I did attempt to use the configurator, but the link takes me to a bunch of Vengeance keyboards and no configurator?

hi lum, that was a good x58 mobo

but dual channel and triple channel ram arent the same at a base level

the mobo manual should have dual channel placement diagrams

but all the dual channel kits in the world are not going to match triple channel performance

but the honest truth is, i wouldn't run a triple channel system with ram running less than 1800mhz and i would never match those old 9xx i7s with dual/quad channel ram

its a different architecture at a production level

my IMO

There's not a difference in the memory design of memory meant for a dual channel / triple channel / quad channel system, it's a difference in the CPU's memory controller.

You could take a 4 stick kit marketed as dual / quad channel, and use three of the four sticks in an X58 system with no issues at all.

Having said that, you never want to mix memory from one kit with another as they haven't been tested together and there's no way to guarantee compatibility without being tested. It may work, it may not.

Yes, it is broke! Glad you reported it so it could be fixed. I wonder how many other people tries to use it?

Techno, could you please have someone fix that link?

I get that. What I wanted to check was that those modules were the same design since the specific model numbers also identify what type of kit they came from rather than the specific memory chips and board layout.

I realise that it might not work, I'm doing this on the cheap after all. Wouldn't be upgrading at all if I hadn't been offered this board + CPU combination for £100. My system is mostly still ok as it is (that P5E64WS Evo is a bit of an obscure board, but it's a really nice one), however even OC'd to 3.6GHz it's starting to get CPU bound in Metro Last Light.

Edit: I guess the other option would be to buy a triple channel 3x2GB kit to populate the second channel and just discard 1 stick from my old quad-channel kit that I'm (ab)using as 2x dual-channel?
