Corsair HX850, loud as a plane?

Got the HX850 here, new V2 version.

This kind.

Anyway, system is 1x HDD, Asrock Extreme 4 Z77, 3570k at 4.5Ghz, 1x GTX 780.

Had been running the system on integrated graphics before this, waiting for GPU to arrive. I had noticed the fan kicks in after a bit of gaming, flys up and makes massive noise, then cuts out after a second. So loud I can hear it over headphones.

Anyway, after installing the card today (and obviously massively increasing the systems power draw), the fan noise is absolutely ridiculous. A system like mine doesn't even come close to maxing out this PSU, it will pull 500w if that, yet 30 seconds into a game the PSU's fan flys up to 100% and stays there forever.

This has to be broken, right? Theres no way anyone would buy this if it were this loud. It's the loudest part of my system without a doubt. It's face up in a Phantom 410, even running it with the case door off.

Even though the fan is at 100%, theres practically no heat coming out of it. No reason for the fan to be this loud.

Please tell me its broken. All the review sites I read were saying they couldn't even get the fan to spin up because it ran so cool.

Thanks.

The HX series uses a combination of temps and load to determine fan speed. So if your above 49c or 40% load and could be any combination of the two.

You are also overclocking your CPU and using a hefty GPU so this may be normal for your system. But if you want to have it replaced to see if another does the same you always have that choice.

Just use the link on the left to request an RMA if you would like to try another.

Thanks for the reply.

It's just that all the reviews state that its extremely quiet, and I've yet to hear it run at anything but 0% at idle, or 100% under the slightest bit of load, theres no middle ground. As soon as I start a game, boom, 100%.

I know the fan is meant to be load related, but like I said I encountered the same issue with integrated graphics, there, my system wouldn't use even 200w, I struggle to see why a 850w PSU from a brand like Corsair needs to run at 100% fan under 1/4 load.

Can anyone confirm its not working as it should then?

Hi cookybiscuit,

I'm having the same problem with my HX1050. After digging around this forum and the internets, I found that there are many hx series psu that show this problem, I also started a thread about it to collect these problems:

http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=118723

It's been over a month since I contacted corsair, received an rma but no luck. Still trying to convince corsair to do something about it. Maybe corsair can help you with a proper solution, but if you have the chance, exchange for a different model?

You're not alone, and it's certainly not a correct fan profile. Not sure if your and my problem are of the exact same nature (sounds the same)

You might try to improve ventilation. If you have like a dust filter at the intake, try if the problem still happens without it.
