Speedi
I've been using Corsair memory in my custom builds for a while, so I certainly want to stick with it - customer service and this forum are totally awesome. Now, after building my Rampage II Extreme with some fast memory, triple channel 6GB Dominator modules ( it was great 4-5 years ago), I'm looking to do the same with a Asus Maximus V Formula. The problem is that I WILL be overclocking the i7-3770K processor but I'm unable to determine which memory modules are needed or will work. I'd like to have 2x8GB modules for 16GB, but with the potential to expand later with another 16GB, if it's needed. The problem I'm seeing is that there appears to be no support on the Asus or Corsair sites (mem QVL or config) for 2x8GB modules unless it's another vendor aside from Corsair and the memory is low performance. Here are the real questions... 1. Can I used 2x8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum memory on this board and if so, what speeds/models can I use? 2. If I can only get 4x8GB or 4x4GB, which would be best Dominator Platinum for overclocking using the i7-3770K with the Asus Maximus V Formula? Thank you! - Speedi

QVL downloads http://ca.asus.com/en/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/MAXIMUS_V_FORMULA/#MSL as for best ram? the one with the lowest CAS rating ofc
Speedi
The Asus QVL and Corsair MemConfig don't seem to be in agreement, which is why I posed the question.
WesternDreaming
tasus tests at the time of release ( years ago) and corsair keeps upto date on tons of platforms and bios updates however the z68 platform was made for second generation cpus and since you've flashed the bios to use a 3rd gen then id go with corsairs configs
peanutz94
1. Can I used 2x8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum memory on this board and if so, what speeds/models can I use? You can use these modules, however the actual speeds you may use or achieve would be determined buy the memory controller in your CPU. Most will run up to 2133mhz and some higher. There is no way to tell what the max memory speed you can achieve is with out trial and error. 2. If I can only get 4x8GB or 4x4GB, which would be best Dominator Platinum for overclocking using the i7-3770K with the Asus Maximus V Formula? There really is no "best" config. Well, I guess the best config would be stock memory clocks. But if you want faster memory thats up to you to determine. As i stated before , most will run up to 2133mhz pretty easy, after that it's hit or miss depending on the individual memory controller in your CPU.And since you are planning on overclocking your CPU too, you may only be able to reach 1866mhz. But you won't know until you actually get your machine up and running .

The 2x8GB configuration is not listed in either the Asus or Corsair "tested configs" is the reason I was asking. I believe I saw it on an overclock forum a few days ago that the Maximus V Formula was tested with 2133MHz Corsair Dominator Platinum and managed some pretty high clock speeds on the ram at 1.65v. There really is no "best" config. Well, I guess the best config would be stock memory clocks. But if you want faster memory thats up to you to determine. But you won't know until you actually get your machine up and running . I understand, but typically, while not guaranteed, the 3770K memory controller can handle some pretty steep clock values. The difference in $ between the 2133 and 2400/2666 also gets steep, so 2133 would be the best value if it will just function in the board. :[pouts: I'm looking to start buying components and really don't want to be hung out to dry by the memory simply not working in the system. :o: Thanks! - Speedi

Also, the system is a z77 board, the Asus Maximus V Formula would be the choice this time around. - Speedi

I believe I saw it on an overclock forum a few days ago that the Maximus V Formula was tested with 2133MHz Corsair Dominator Platinum and managed some pretty high clock speeds on the ram at 1.65v. The Platinums are indeed compatible with that board ,even though they do not show on a QVL or Corsair list. It just means they have not been tested with that specific MB yet. But if this will ease your mind some this is from the tech specs on the product page. System requirements Compatible with Intel Z77 and X79 platforms http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/dominator-platinum-ddr3-memory/dominator-platinum-with-corsair-link-connector-1-65v-16gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmd16gx3m4b2133c9.html I wouldn't recommend any kit unless i was absolutly sure they are compatible. But if you would like to hear it from RamGuy first hand I'm always cool with that. I understand, but typically, while not guaranteed, the 3770K memory controller can handle some pretty steep clock values. The difference in $ between the 2133 and 2400/2666 also gets steep, so 2133 would be the best value if it will just function in the board. I also agree. But i have also seen some struggle with 2133mhz with the same chip. It's the luck of the draw when it comes to the meory controllers though. But generally you are correct...2133mhz would be about the sweet spot. Corsair did some testing with the Vengeance extreme memory at 3000mhz. They had to go through 25 CPU's to find just one that had a memory controller strong enough to run at those speeds. And there are quite a few other threads of other users trying to hit 2200 and above with no success. *shrugs* But i think you'll be happy with the 2133mhz kit regardless. http://www.corsair.com/us/blog/vengeance-extreme-3000mhz-setup-and-overclocking-results/ Cheers! Speedi
Thanks, guys, for all the advice. I appreciate it, greatly. I dove in for the 2133MHz Dominator Platinum 2x8GB kit. Now, if my 900D would come in before the rest of these components, that would be great!
Speedi
The 2133MHz DP 2x8GB kit works flawlessly. I have the CPU OCd to 4.6GHz and the memory is humming along at 1066MHz.. no problems at this time. I will also say that I dumped the 900D for the 800D. The 900D was out of stock or delayed and all of my components were in and ready. Since I had no idea when it would be in, the 800D it was! Very good choice.. and very good case.
