nocturnal1026
Hi, I just recently bought the sabertooth rev 2.0 mobo and this memory: CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 DUAL CHANNEL KIT. I started to test the ram with memtest86+ 4.20 boot cd. Test all done with legacy usb off and on. with no change. the only test I fail is test 6 usually after the 10gb mark. all sticks tested by them selves in each slot. only 1 stick passes in first slot and fails test 6 in the rest. the other stick fails test 6 in all slots. all components new bought at the same time so trying to figure out whats faulty. I also tested the memory at jdec defaults and rated speed, with ram at 1.6v and imc at 1.22v. raising the voltage made things worse and running at jdec defaults and rated speed yeilded the same results. What I get from this is 1 stick of ram bad and 3 memory slots on mobo bad. i'm trying to rule out the IMC on my FX 8350. the stick that passes every time passes for four passes of test 6 while all others fail the first pass. I tried calling asus yesterday to inquire about an RMA and I never had this bad of a CS experience in my life. basicly there telling me if my memory is not on the QVL that if I send it in, they will test with memory that's on the QVL and if it works ill just get the same mother board back. What i'm afraid of is they wont test it with memtest and just check if they can boot up and run the memory. That's the impression I got from the CS agent. I also just ordered some more memory off the egg so I can test with a different set.(G.SkillL TridentX 1866 cas 8 16gb dual chan kit) the only 2x8gb kit I seen confirmed to work in more than one place with this mobo and cpu. i'm not new to this and been building systems for 18 years. I never in my past experienced this much trouble with a build or this high of a failure rate with parts. I have been troubleshooting for a week now. Maybe RAMGUY or someone can chime in with some ideas because im fresh out, besides testing the new memory when it gets delivered in a couple hours. EDIT: I just realized in the bios where the NB speed adjustments are it has entries listed as UNSUPPORTED where the speeds bel.w 1400mhz are supposed to be and I don't remeber it saying that when I first was in the bios. BIOS 1708 BTW. EDIT 2: cleared the bios for 10 min and now only 3 of the NB speed selections are listed as UNSUPPORTED. this is strange.
peanutz94
Since you have new memory on the way, i would wait for that to show up. If it runs without issues then you have your answer. I love Corsair products but there seems to be some issue between the Vengeance kits and the FX series MB's The Sabertooth being one of them. Search the forums for either and there are quite a few of these with the same exact symptoms. Always fail test 6 EDIT: I just realized in the bios where the NB speed adjustments are it has entries listed as UNSUPPORTED where the speeds bel.w 1400mhz are supposed to be and I don't remeber it saying that when I first was in the bios. BIOS 1708 BTW. EDIT 2: cleared the bios for 10 min and now only 3 of the NB speed selections are listed as UNSUPPORTED. this is strange. Thats weird. Never saw that before. maybe related to memory controller limitations... http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=110429 Other Sabertooth and AMD FX series threads http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=117034&highlight=CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=115875&highlight=CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=115851&highlight=CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=113378&highlight=CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=113351&highlight=CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=117773&highlight=CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/search.php?searchid=7009324 These are just a few examples. The last link is nothing but that kit number and test6 results. It really looks like this is an AMD issue rather than a board issue since it spans across many vendors. nocturnal1026
Hi, back again with some results. This G.Skill Trident X is some nice memory. Very high quality. so far it is passing  test 6 with flying colors. So i'm sure its safe to say that the corsair memory is not compatible with 990FX and vishera. The new memory is running at 8-9-9-24 2T @1.60v without problems. there is another problem though. when I load bios defaults after a CMOS Clear, the NB and HT are at 2200 and 2600 respectively. after I turn of power saving features and manually put in the rams rated timings and freq. I reboot and now HT is at 2200Mhz on auto. I thought the auto defaults for HT are supposed to be 2600Mhz? Is this a bios quirk or what? should I just manually set it to 2600Mhz? I'm so relived now that it aint the Mobo. Glad I bought that Gskill Ram yesterday. RMA has been approved for the corsair memory, so I guess I'll RMA it then sell the new sticks. peanutz94
So i'm sure its safe to say that the corsair memory is not compatible with 990FX and vishera. T No, it's not that they are NOT compatible. Just that for what ever reason SOME of the FX series CPU's seem to have a problem with this memory . They should be fully compatible with all of the latest Intel and AMD MB's. If all of them did not run this memory then it would be a compatibility issue. But there are a few cases of those boards and this memory haveing issues and it could boil down to just a picky memory controller on some of them.. As far as setting up your new memory goes, I'm sorry, but you would need to ask those questions over at their forums. But don't forget about Intels's turbo boost which may be why your seeing those values change.
nocturnal1026
Oh I wasn't asking how to set up the competitors memory. I got that running great. I thank you though for taking the time to assist me with any problems.. Also when I said the corsair memory wasn't compatable, I was refering to this part #. There also can be small variances in this memory from batch to batch or ver. number. All I know is my CPU seems to really like this new memory because it's been running memtest86+ since 4:00 P.M. Eastern time yesterday at 8-9-9-24 1.6v @ 1T and has still not thrown 1 error up. I'm a bit surprised it can run at 1T at these timings and speed. Especially since the 2 XMP profiles list 2T in the ratings. Now I know that XMP is an intel spec and isn't meant to be used with AMD. Still though, got me wondering what IC's are in there. BTW I have turbo and all power saving features disabled. Still trying to figure out why its auto detecting my HT bus at 2200mhz instead of 2600. I think I will just manually adjust all settings to spec. Thank you for all your input.
