Corsair Vengeance 2000 - Broken Micro USB Connector - DIY?

Hi!

 

A while ago, my little brother told me that he's headset didn't receive any charging. After a quick look at it, I discovered that the pins inside the Micro USB connector on the headset itself are broken and physically damaged.

 

I take it that no warranties cover this damage, as it won't even do that in Norway, which where we as private consumers already have extremely good rights. Therefore, I see no point in returning for RMA. But I can also not see the point in throwing away a good headset if it is only the Micro USB connector that is broken.

 

I therefore want to do a replacement myself.

 

New Micro USB connectors are ready for order, I have all necessary tools and equipment available at work. The only thing I'd have to know, is how to disassemble the left ear cup and access the PCB on the inside without breaking anything. The only logical "entrance" I could find was taking off the ear muff and then use a flat head screwdriver to pivot the plastic out. I have not done this yet though, as I'm afraid of breaking something in the process.

 

I request a disassembly manual on the headset. If I can do this, I will try to document the replacement process as good as I can.

 

Note that as I see it, my only other option is to throw it in the garbage, where it will only contribute to the electronic waste.

Unfortunately, there are no guides that tell you how to disassemble a V2000 headset as it will void the warranty.

 

I'm not sure if you can get an RMA, But its best wait for RAM GUY to say whether you can or not before disassembling it.

I just spoke to my brother and had him remember when the connector was most likely to have broken. Our conversation concluded that the headset stopped charging after the plug had broken (taking into account that he was right about when the plug broke).

 

Nevertheless, the plug is physically damaged and covered by no warranties. I've got access to a professional electronics lab, fully ESD-secure zone and top-notch equipment and tools. Voiding the warranty is of no concern to me nor to my brother; If I replace the connector and something happens to it afterwards, so be it. We'll have to pick up a new one.

 

If I cannot get any guidelines on how to properly open it here, I will do my best and improvise.
