Bonka
Hi guys, I'm a little unclear as to whether this is normal, a faulty PSU or other system component as I haven't found a clear answer yet. Anyway, the power switch on my surge protector bar was accidently switched off while the computer was on but the power supply would not power itself back on afterwards. I tried the paperclip functionality test which didn't power up the PSU fan nor the fan I hooked up. I swapped another PSU into the system and it booted leading me back to the HX850. I took the HX850 out of the system and left it until I came home from work tonight and tried the paperclip test again and the fans spun up. I hooked it up to the system and low and behold it powered on. All seems to be fine no funny smells or instability before or after. I've had this happen once before and it yielded the same result of it working after leaving it alone. I'm not sure if this is one of the features of the HX850 (looking into it now) since it's rather inconvient that I'd have to wait for half a day before knowing whether or not the PSU is cooked. Faulty? Actual design? Thanks.
peanutz94
Thats a new one to me. The only thing I can think of is that the internal circuit protection just took a few minutes to reset. When this has happened both times, does the PSu function normally afterwords? Power switch on the case work ok? And is it stable also? And lastly the switch on the surge protector was flipped both times as well...correct? Sorry for all the questions, but i'm just trying to get a good feel for this. Bonka
The PSU appears to function normally both times it happened. No crashing or instability. I'm not sure if stress testing would be helpful in this case. First time I don't remember if the switch on the surge protector was hit but the system was definitely not powered down properly. I think it was a power outage in my area.
peanutz94
If it is other wise acting normally i wouldn't worry too much about it. I really think it's just a matter of the circuit protection taking a little longer to reset. And this may be completely normal for that PSU, but i would have to let RamGuy answer that one. I mean if it's stable , shuts down and powers up on command and is not making any noises, I would just keep an eye on it. This really is the first time I have ever seen anyone post an issue after power was inadvertently shut down and the PSU not powering up right away, so i really can't offer you any other suggestions...wish I could. camalbitboy
If I were you I'd get a multimeter and check the outputs on the rails. My HX850 was randomly shutting down and could take half an hour to restart (I guess an overheated component cooling down?) My Asus mobo has surge protection on it and when I switched that on I would get a message after a crash and reboot saying that the mobo had shut down the system after measuring a power surge. I got round to trying to swap out the psu to confirm that was the issue to discover that the main power connector to the mobo had a melted pin. The psu is obv unusable, and because of all the melted plastic in the mobo connector I can't plug another psu in as well (I wouldn't use a fire damaged mobo regardless....) I've logged a call and am waiting to see what Corsair will do about it. Oh if I were you I'd also unplug all the modular cables and check them at the psu end as I read a thread re a Corsair psu where the psu end of the connector had melted instead.
