Something strange with SSD

Hi guys,

Today i've noticed that in windows 7@64 rating, my SSD has a 5.9 rate.

Until now it had 7.9 every time, since i have it.

I have a Corsair Force GT SSD 90GB SATA 3.

I don't know if it's from windows or from the drive. I did some tests on the drive, and it runs like it whould be. no problem at all with it. It even runs a little better.

I never did a firmware update on it, and i know it is outdated, but it runs very good as it is.

Any ideas? I didn't changed any settings in BIOS, i didn't do nothing.

If your drive is very full, you need to clear some space.

 

You may also need to defragment your drive. Windows needs a couple of gig of contiguous space to run the benchmark properly.

 

Just don't make a habit of defragmenting your drives. It isn't generally a needed item for SSD maintenance, and doing it too often will put excessive wear on the drive.

edit: everything is ok now. i have 7.9 back. it was due to space. i deleted some of 10GB, and now it is ok.

LOL. but i still had 7GB left. how much does it need to make ratings? :))

 

It needs contiguous empty space. With only 7gig free, that free space is probably split in dozens of different blocks across the LBA map, none of which were large enough to run the benchmark in.

The W.E.I tool should not be used to benchmark the drive's performance.

 

I agree with this, but if WEI is saying 5.9, it might be assuming that the drive is NOT a SSD, and not applying correct optimizations. So it is best to just fix that up.

 

Run a ATTO benchmark and post a screenshot here.

 

Not that ATTO is any better at properly benchmarking sandforce drives. But you can confirm that you can see the same numbers corsair did when running ATTO on the drive :)

Yap, the controller fragements the data on purpose across the drive to achieve high read-performance

Wait what, you try gaining more disc-performance by overclocking cpu? :confused: Whos the real stranger here?

 

 

P.S.: A SSD does NOT need continguous free space left, it is not an HDD, in fact internally it has that situation NEVER, except all is empty. The controller simply knows all free-space, no matter where it is, if it's split and it can access those in no real difference of time. The next block after physical beginning of the drive is written as fast as the block at the physical end of the drive. The problem with having 7GB left, is that you do NOT have ENOUGH cells free to take advantage of full writing performance.

 

Defragmenting SSDs is the worst thing you can do i with it, except of physical destruction.

 

Having a tiny bit of fraction left for writing and wondering why it is not at 100% performance... well... and then such answers XD

I think you are overreacting a bit. At worse, you would consume a single write cycle over the NAND, given serious fragmentation on a nearly full drive. MLC NAND will typically take at least 5000, and often considerably more write cycles before failing.

Not really, don't exaggerate.

 

In any case, OP could install defraggler, and run a defrag freespace operation, which would present even less wear on the drive, while allowing WEI to complete successfully.

same problem again.. :)) and now i have 25GB space free. but everything runs fine.. speed is ok, etc..

WEI is **** ! :D

 

Lol, stop running WEI all the time. You should only be running it when hardware changes, so windows can retune itself.

 

Otherwise run it once and leave it alone!

 

WEI is not a performance benchmark, it is for windows to work out what effects and settings it can use on your computer without over-stressing it. For that, it works adequately.

 

There are plenty of better benchmarks for really working out how fast things are!
