grassy
hey guys, i have 2 corsair vengence memory kits and am wondering if the kits were mixed up and placed in the slots at random would the machine still start. To be a little more precise they are 2x 32gig kits for a total of 64 gig.Thankyou.
damon69
hey grassy! The vast majority of the time, mixing RAM kits is bad juju. They either do not Post at all, or the user will run into endless errors and headaches, corruption of the OS etc.. So most experts will warn you not to mix. If you have a brand new OS install, or backups you believe in, then it might be worth a try. I know how you feel as I own several expensive DDR3 kits, and I was determined to max out my Windows 7 Ivy Bridge RAM capacities. Out of a total of 6 kits, I got two that play well together. My Dominator Platinum 2666 and my G. Skill RipJawZ 2400 run very well at 2400MHz w/ pretty tight timings. But all of the other combos were pretty much... er... bad! Had to reinstall windows once, reflash BIOS once, and had many instances of no POSTs, lockups etc. So... I guess you pays your money and you takes your chances! You can try what you like but Corsair does not suggest or support mixing kits because of the various issues the previous user posted. They can only guarantee correct operation or rated speeds when you use one single matched kit. You may get them to run together but it may be at reduced speeds. But still no guarantee that it will work.
