maxlifan
Hey guys, I know this is my first post and my first time using any corsair parts but please bare with me. I know it is a long post, but it is very difficult explain my situation otherwise. I am currently a University Student in Toronto. A few weeks ago I managed to acquires some extra funds and I planned to upgrade a part that I always felt was lacking on. At the time I was using a Enermax FMA II 535 watt power supply but the unit had been in use for almost 6 years and I was beginning to fear the worst for it. Especially with my HD 7970 graphics card in place. So about 18 days ago (April 1st), I saw a sale at the local Canada computers and decided to get a HX850. It was expensive but based on the review it would seem like it was worth it. After putting in everything my new machine worked perfectly. Or at least so I thought. Over the next few days my windows 8 had randomly reboot many times without my knowledge and I had shaken it off due to "Windows being windows". However today, Disaster struck. Upon restarting my computer, I hear a loud whirl and then silent. Nothing was spinning, nothing was on. I feared the worst. I tried replugging in everything in my system, but nothing nothing came on when I pushed the power button. Currently is my Exam week at the University of Toronto, (One of the harshest weeks of my current life) and I can not be without my study notes or my final projects.(Which are all saved on my hard drive) Which is why I am currently extremely frustrated, but more importantly scared as the bureaucrats at my school will not take anything as a excuse. Especially my computer exploded..... I had hoped that it was only the power supply that had failed. I managed to borrow another power supply from my friend and plug it in. At first it seemed that my system booted it up, but afterwards I had all sorts of issues. When windows booted, it immediate went to repair mode. And the moment I pressed anything it would crash to the unhappy screen. I thought it was my ram at first, so I did a Memtest86 runthrough and it turned out over 6000 errors. But the thing was, before the power supply had failed my ram and hd worked perfectly. So I feared that the power supply had damaged other components as well. I immediately took my hardrive to my friends house and to my surprise the drive wasn't showing up properly on his desktop. I was speechless. I had hours of final work in that drive but now it was lost. The good part being that I still had the majority of my work saved on dropbox (a lesson I learned from years past) but some of the other material I required for my exams I had no way of getting back. (Mostly typed notes) At this point I honestly have no idea what to do. So I wrote this thread. I am in a in between area for Canada Computers (Where I purchased the card) as I am still within the 30 day warranty but out of the 15 day direct replacement. But even after that I am still out my hard drive and my ram. I am hoping that my motherboard and graphics card still work but as it seems right now it does not seem highly likely. As when I tested my HD 7970 on my friends computer through furmark it start showing artifacts at stock speeds half way through the test. And crashed before ending. I have spent the last few hours researching on what to do and it seems that Corsair seems to have pretty good support. I can currently barely afford a new powersupply, but there is no way I can afford to rebuild my entire desktop from ground up. I have explained and sent emails to some of my professors (I am currently studying management with a minor in law) and one of them has tried to convince me to ask if corsair would be willing to replace all the parts and damages with shipping. I honestly don't know if this is reasonable but it seems better then the alternative my professor had suggested which was small claims court. (I don't have an intention on going there). Tomorrow I will go to my local computer store and see if they can help me recover my harddrive. It seems it will cost around 100 dollars, but I am willing to pay such a price. Thanks, I really hope someone at corsair can help me out. Sincerely Frustrated, Scared and confused.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 19, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 19, 2013 First I am sorry that happened and I do understand it is not an easy task to deal with and certainly you do not need the added stress. The first thing to do would be to create an RMA by using the link on the left and explain that you wish to make a damage claim, then post your case number and I will see what I can do to speed things along. But it is not quick process it will take 2-4 weeks to process the claim and inspect the PSU to see if it would have caused the damage you are claiming. maxlifan
Hi RamGuy Thanks for the quick reply. I managed to get most out of the data out of the drive today after a visit to Canada computers. So it seems I'm safe at that end. It seems that the store itself is willing to test the power supply along with all the other components for free, as I am still under their warranty policy. However if the power supply did prove to be faulty, they would have to RMA(Not directly replace) for me instead. Is it possible for me to still open up such a damage report in such a case? In addition would be a faster method to RMA instead of the 2-4 weeks? As I will be most likely heading out of the country in June. Also if Canada computer's tests prove that components had been damaged, would that be useful in anyway in a report form? (I believe the report costs money). In addition, I check with Canada post and shipping on such an hefty product is extremely high. I currently have to take Canada Computer's free shipping. Otherwise I do not believe I am able to pay for the amount, as I am a student and it is currently near years end and I am at the end of my budget as well. Would Corsair be able to provide a shipping label to me in anyway? Thanks again
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 19, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 19, 2013 Actually as part of the damage claim process they will send you a shipping label to send the items you are claiming so I would still proceed and would work with our customer service if there are any shipping issues. maxlifan
Hi Ram Guy I have submitted an RMA case form. I have listed the number below. Your case number is 5851819, please keep this number for future reference. I have recorded a video showing me trying to test the PSU as documented proof. I was wondering if it was required that I upload it. Thank you for your continued support.
Administrators Technobeard Posted April 19, 2013 Administrators Share Posted April 19, 2013 Quick (unrelated) question - where did you find the RMA link? Ram Guy said to use the link on the left, but the RMA number you have is from the old RMA system (which isn't linked on the left anymore). The RMA number is still valid of course. Ram Guy said to use the link on the left, but the RMA number you have is from the old RMA system (which isn't linked on the left anymore). The RMA number is still valid of course. Umm.. sorry about that. I went through the official Corsair Website.... Sooo... well at least I think I did. I went to google and searched Corsair Support. And it led me to the website where I went through a few links and got to the RMA request form. Here's just a video of what I tried to do to test the PSU. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cyefCh7Xxw&feature=youtu.be (Not sure if Linking is allowed) Update: After much reflection and consideration, I was wondering if it would be possible for Corsair to accept the power supply as a return and refund me the amount that was paid for the unit? Personally I haven't had a psu die on me in the past and damage components with it (whether this be the fault of the power supply going out or the instant loss of power, as I can not confirm the cause) as I am afraid of such a case happening again with another new Corsair HX850 psu. I personally do not want to take the risk at this point after going through it once.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 22, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 22, 2013 I am sorry but that is not possible unless you purchased it directly from us. And at this point we do not know for sure what caused the issue, so I would proceed so this can be investigated.

maxlifan
Hey Ram Guy Thanks for the continued help. I am currently in the process of also RMA'ing my Memory with OCZ and my 7970 with Sapphire (They have locations in Markham where I can do a quick dropoff and exchange). Since both companies are willing to replace my parts I do not believe I will need to seek damage claims any longer from Corsair. However is it possible to still use the service for prepaid shipping as it is still very expensive from my end. Also in addition is it possible to cross ship with corsair? Thanks.
