Gigabyte GA-P55-UD6 + CMD16GX3M2A1866C9

Hey all,

I've been running 4GB Dominator(CMD4GX3M2A1600C8) for 3 years now and I'm thinking it's time to jump on the 16GB wagon. Main reason, I got an SSD and want to get rid of my pagefile.

I want to stick with Corsair, and I want to stick with Dominator - truly the best RAM I've ever owned. Problem is, I'm having a hard time finding what Corsair Dominator Ram I should be using.

I have a Gigabyte P55-UD6 Motherboard(LGA1156) (w/ i7 860 Lynnfield), and I'm concerned that the Dominator Plat. 16gb 2x8GB (CMD16GX3M2A1866C9) may not work with my motherboard - Corsair doesn't list it when I do the compatibility check (http://www.corsair.com/learn_n_explore)

I guess my 2 main concerns:

- Will this RAM even work with my motherboard/chipset (Lynnfield i7 860)?

- Will 2x8GB work properly? (I don't want to do 4x4gb)

What would recommend for the aging 1156/p55 chipset in 2x8GB?

Thanks in advance <3

No they would not work on that board. You would have to go with a 4x4gig kit. The first gen I7's are limited to 4 gig modules max. And with that CPU i doubt you would be able to get them to run at 1866mhz. It would depend on the strength of the memory controller in your CPU. And most of the first gen I7's struggled with speeds above 1600mhz.

You could certainly try it. The worst that would happen is that you would need to run them at 1600mhz anyway.

yes, I wasn't going to run @ 1866 - was going to run around 1710 (where my 1600 dominator is running at now)

I've read that the p55 does support 8gb modules, it just doesn't officially because 8gb modules didn't exist at the time of the motherboard's release. (G.Skill lists 8gb modules compatible with P55)

I'm just more concerned that the Dominators will work with my mobo.. and I'd rather not take my business to G.skill

I did some searching around to try and confirm what your saying and did find a few threads on other forums that would suggest certain kits run fine on the x58 chipset, but only one on the p55 chipset..

I've seen both sides of the fence where some users have had great results with 8 gig modules , even though they are not supposed to run on those boards because of chip density. And others didn't fare so well. So it look like hit and miss.

But I know Corsair will tell you the same thing....That they do not have any kits that they would have tested on that board and would not be able to guarantee that they would work. So if you do get a 16 gig kit I'm guessing it would be at your own risk and be sure where ever you buy them from has a good return policy

  • 3 weeks later...

Update!

Beautiful day today - took the PC outside and air dusted it. Took out my 4gb Dominator kit and put in the 16GB Dominator Platinum - booted up! ... Booted into Windows.. works perfect. :)

BIOS/Windows detects both 8gb chipsets perfectly!

Runs @ 1866mhz(probably more) even on this system when OCed, but I cannot do that high because I'm only on stock cooling. So it's running @ 1704mhz (Same speed that the 4gb kit was set at). My CPU temps get too high since I'm already OC'd from 2.8ghz to 3.12ghz.

Anyways, <3 Corsair Dominator. Best ram - I don't know how they make it work so perfectly, but it does.

shm0,

if you really want to "get rid of the pagefile" (I assume you mean get rid of the time it takes writing to it, because Windows will not run without a pagefile) then with your new 16GB of RAM you could consider creating a RAM Disk and consigning the pagefile there.

I have been experimenting with this for three weeks now and it is working perfectly. So you could create a 2GB RAM Disk partition, point the virtual memory there and also the likes of your browser cache. Every time your system reboots the contents are wiped and recreated, so no more hassle with a corrupted pagefile.

There was a software that used to cost a quite a lot but which has now been made freeware called "SoftPerfect RAM Drive 3.3.3" and I am very happy with it.

It has two major advantages, you can create the RAM Drive at boot (which you need if you want to point the pagefile to it) but also you can create an NTFS partition straight away (as opposed to other RAM Disk programs where you can only create a FAT32 partition and you have to format it to make it NTFS) and of course you can apply compression to it.

You cannot even remotely approach the speed of a RAM Disk with an SSD.
