staiger
I wonder if anyone, perhaps Ramguy, can help me. I am in the process of putting together a list of components to do a substantial upgrade to my current computer system. To power it all I am considering getting the AX1200i PSU. I currently have the AX850 and because I want to get a CPU upgrade and run 2 NVidia GTX680’s I want to make sure there is power available and that the PSU is not “stressed”. My question is this. The reason I bought the AX850 was twofold. One the fact that I only need to use the cables required to build my PC, the other is that should I need to replace it due to failure or as I want to do upgrade it makes the process easy. I am being told by some UK dealers that I cannot simply undo the cables from the back of the AX850 replace it with the AX1200i and then plug the cables back in. I would have to completely remove all the old cables from my PC and replace with the cables from the box the AX1200i came in. Is this true? If so could someone spare the time to explain why? Apart from the data cable for the Corsair link surely the power cables are nothing special? The reason I would not be happy removing the cables from my PC is that due to an illness I can longer do the work myself and would need to employ the services of a technician. This whole upgrade has been in the planning for over a year and so has the amount of money I have saved to carry it out. I really cannot afford this additional cost. If it were just a matter of swapping the PSU’s this is something I could just about do. I do hope you can help with this question as I have always built my computers, prior to illness, with Corsair products I.e. case, memory, heat sink, Psu’s, SSD’s. I don’t mention this to gain favour just to let you know that I am committed to the brand and if what I am hearing is true means that you have made a design error that will upset a lot of “home builders” who like me, spent what seemed like hours tidying the cables when the system was originally built. Thank you
peanutz94
Sorry, you'll have to redo all your cables. They are different between the two PSU's. Just wired differently internally and also use different connectors. You could still do the job yourself. Just unplug one cable at a time and replace it with the same cable on the new PSU. However the GTX680's depending on the model will only use around 195w at full power. And with 2 of them , and today's games, you probably won't see that happen too much if ever. Your 850 would still be able to run your upgrades without a sweat if you wanted too. http://www.geeks3d.com/20090618/graphics-cards-thermal-design-power-tdp-database/ If you lived anywhere close to me I would offer to do it for you free of charge.. I know what it's like to be down from illness. Just had my fifth spine fusion myself.. I am committed to the brand and if what I am hearing is true means that you have made a design error that will upset a lot of “home builders” who like me, spent what seemed like hours tidying the cables when the system was originally built. Unfortunately, technology doesn't stay the same for very long and is forever moving forward. As PSU's become more efficient the wiring and components change too.
