jpaines
Take it for what it's worth -- every other possible explanation hasn't been eliminated -- but both or either of Asus GPU utilities and MB utilities (for tuning, overclocking, etc.) with the Asus Pro P9x79 MB/Geforce 660Ti seem to have caused the HW1050 to be much noiser, and the system to run hotter, than necessary. Note that no changes were made to any of the settings. Did not overclock, etc. Thinking that maybe these utilities had something to do with noise, which was particularly noticeable under load (editing multiple streams of video, encoding video, etc.), I uninstalled them both but nothing changed. It also appeared that some processes associated with these utilities were still running, despite the uninstall. Then, for unrelated reasons, I restored a system image created *before* installing either of the Asus utilities. From that point on, the MB temperature dropped several degrees, and the machine is much quieter now -- so far, no "engine revving" from the PSU. If it's any slower, I haven't noticed. Could be other factors, and the testing hasn't been exhaustive. But it looks like those utilities were causing noise.
Speed
Same MB with a GTX670, here. Interesting datapoint. I'll have to keep an eye on things. I've since uninstalled AI Suite II but leave the ASUS GPU utility running. ASUS engineers have cited themselves that AI Suite doesn't play well with other monitoring applications. peanutz94
It's not just ASUS AIsuite. It's a known issue that anytime you have multiple monitoring programs installed it could cause the sensors to read incorrectly.
