jcr918
I am currently having some issues with my system. It's been great for the most part but lately I have been having some issues. About every three days my system would freeze up and I would have to shut it down and restart. Now it's happening about 3 times a day. Before the system would freeze now the screen goes black and there is a noise in the speakers. I looked in the error logs and it said something about critical error Kernel power. I bought the corsair power supply about 2 years ago it's 750 watts and I am running a 5830 graphics card with i7 960 cpu with liquid cooling by corsair. Any suggestions if this is the power supply or what I should start checking ?
Speed
Kernel Power ID41 errors aren't directly related to power. They are generated whenever the machine doesn't perform a graceful shutdown of Windows, so the name is a bit misleading. Anything that causes the computer to become unstable: overheated, driver conflict, runaway process, too high or too low voltage to the CPU set in the BIOS, lots of things, including complete loss of power, will cause this. So, begin going back through all that has changed recently. Something may stick out that you can reverse. Go into the BIOS and check the monitoring section to see if the voltages are correct. One thing that I do know, sound drivers are notorious for shutdowns. That you say there's a noise in the speakers during this event looks like it may be a pointer. peanutz94
As the previous poster said this is basically a "generic" error and could be anything from a bad driver to , yes, a PSU What are the voltages in your BIOS reading? 12v 5v 3.3v?
jcr918
Once I get home I will post my readings. So far KNOCK on wood I haven't had anymore shut downs. I flashed the bios yesterday and updated the drivers. It's still too soon to get excited but I will post my results shortly
jcr918
Ok so it froze up and turned back on then I went into core temp and hit the screen shot button to share my temps and give you guys my voltage and BAM the system screamed fans spun up and system shut off and now it won't turn on. I can hit the power button and it will cycle for 2 seconds then shut off ? any suggestions now ?
peanutz94
Replace it! Please use the link on the left to request an RMA.
jcr918
Do you think that's the problem and not the mother board ?
peanutz94
I would really think so. The reason i think it's a PSU is because of your description of the fans all going to 100% This usually happens when the 3.3v rail dips too low. This will also prevent the machine from booting correctly.
jcr918
Ok this would make my day if it's the psu specially since it's under warranty :D:
peanutz94
Yup, there just isn't anything there that would point towards a bad MB. Besides it's far easier to replace a PSU than a MB anyday! If need be you can request an advanced replacement too. But i would suggest calling in to CS to have that set up.
jcr918
Ok so my desktop magically came back on. I am still going to RMA the PSU. I would say it's a safe bet that motherboard is fine correct ?
peanutz94
Yes, but i wouldn't use it with that PSu to avoid any possible damage.
