Corsair AX850 - Squeaky Noise

Daredevil 720

Recommended Posts

Alright, here's the story. My brother and I traded PSUs, I got his used AX850 and he got my old one which is not a Corsair. Anyway...

After installing the AX850 on my system, I immediately noticed this squeaky kind of sound coming from the PSU. It sounds like a rat squeaking, a bird singing, a metal door slightly squeaking, I think you're getting the picture.

It's not really loud or very high pitched, and it isn't continuous. It repeats in almost perfect timing though and it's driving me nuts. It doesn't matter if I'm using the keyboard/mouse or if the PC is idle or not, it doesn't stop.

What's confusing me is that it doesn't sound like coil whine. I've experienced coil whine on an older computer and it wasn't like that. This sounds like it's a mechanical noise, not electrical. When I'm paying attention to it I'm imagining the fan producing the noise, but that is highly unlikely. I would go ahead and record it for you to hear but I don't think the mic will pick it up.

My brother says he hadn't noticed this sound when the PSU was in his rig, but then again my brother has a noisy PC in general so I don't know what to make out of this.

What I want from you is to tell me if this has been described before and what could be producing this sound. Could it be coil whine considering it happens on my idle system without me moving the mouse and stuff? Wouldn't the pitch change according to my activity if this was coil whine?

We have described this as chirping sound. Are you able to see the fan of the PSU inside your case? If you can, see if the sound happens when the starts to spin briefly.. or sometimes would spin and stop then the noise is produced.

It's definitely a chirping sound. It sounds exactly like in this video:

The fan does spin and stop repeatedly some times when idle at the desktop.

What can I do? Can I fix it or do I have to send it to you guys?
