johnmedgla
I have two Vengeance headsets, a 2000 and a 1500. The 1500 is genuinely faulty, it pops and crackles on every computer and every operating system I've attached it to, and so has been sent for RMA. The 2000 however functions perfectly with my Power Mac, a Linux box, and 2 XP desktops - but makes infuriating intermittent popping noises on any computer running Vista/7/8. I have finally been able to resolve this by following the instructions in a thread on Neowin to enable support for HPET (High precision event timer) in Windows, which has existed since Vista but is disabled by default. You can find the discussion and instructions by googling 'Tweak enable HPET' and following the first Neowin link - I won't link directly since I'm uncertain the mods approve of such, and I attach all the standard caveats about reading and understanding before attempting anything that could potentially cause something unfortunate to happen - and enjoin people to be aware that this may affect more than just clarity of audio playback. I strongly suggest you read that entire thread before deciding whether or not to try it. I mention it since this intermittent popping noise has driven me mad for the last six months, seems to be a common problem with ALL USB headsets, and can happen even when the hardware itself is in perfect working order. I promise nothing - you'll have to try for yourself and see if it makes any difference, but I hope it helps some people. Best of luck, and kindest regards. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 25, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 25, 2013 Actually John, please post that link you're referring to. If you were able to solve the issue, I'd love to pass it along to our team to see why the fix works.
johnmedgla
This is the thread discussing the issue. I should note that it was already enabled in BIOS on all three of my machines, but the console command seems to have resolved the intermittent distortion on the V2000 and also the ancient Microsoft LifeChat headset it replaced. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 26, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 26, 2013 This is very interesting. It seems that it really is a mixed bag for many people. It is at the very least worth a try.
shankly1985
@OP do you by any chance use Intel Smart Response? I used to get audio crackling and popping when I had my SSD caching with an HDD. Since I disabled it the issue went away, I new installed windows on my SSD instead.
johnmedgla
No, I've never had any reason to use Smart Response at home - all my drives are Samsung SSDs so there's nothing to cache. I've actually experienced the problem I was discussing in a Vista VM running on a Ramdisk, so I ruled out problems with storage controllers fairly early. To be clear, I no longer have a problem - enabling HPET in Windows has resolved my (non-faulty-hardware) audio woes.
