RMA Replaced my HX1000W with a HX1050..

Hi guys. Apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.

After my HX1000 suddenly died last month, I RMA'd it and a couple of days ago I was very surprised to take delivery of a shiny new HX1050.

All was well, I got it connected up, booted into Windows and everything appeared to be working as it should. Happy days.

Now today, I decided I'd play some games and initially things were OK, but after half an hour or so I started to notice the PSU Fan suddenly speed up and gradually fade again every few minutes. Very, very annoying! :wtfman:

I don't think there is anything technically wrong with the PSU per se, but I've gone to great lengths to make my PC as quiet as possible and the HX1000 was much quieter than this unit while under load. (Pretty much the reason I chose the HX1000 in the first place)

The RMA shipping confirmation said I'd be receiving a CMPSU-1000HXUK, so why on earth did I get a HX1050 instead? :confused:

Probably because the HX1000 is not made anymore , so they gave you a suitable replacement. If the fan is not acting right i would suggest you call CS and let them know and I'm sure they will get you another unit as soon as possible.

But it would be best to contact them by phone so you don't get caught up waiting on emails.

Thanks peanutz94, that's a good point. I've emailed customer support with my problem, hopefully they'll have a solution. I'll update this thread when I hear back from them.

Well guys, I'm back.. don't all leave at once. :P

Here's the response I got from customer support;

I am sorry but that actually sounds normal for this model the fan in the PSU supports Fan less operation and as such will turn itself on and off as needed to keep the unit cool. The fan will come on at about 49 Deg C of internal temp in the PSU and turn off at about 39-42 Deg C. If you are running a moderately loaded system configuration it may display this system because it is hovering around the cut off temp internally causing the fan to turn on and off ever few min.

So it's supposed to sound like a Boeing 747? This seems to be a fairly common complaint for the HX1050. I hope Corsair will do the right thing here.

If the fan running all the time? The PSU has a fan less mode, so when do you exactly hear noise? when the fan is running or there is a noise even if the fan is not running?

Sorry, but your question is a bit unclear.

I get the same thing with my HX1050 (Gold), and assumed the fan is responding to internal temperatures -- speeding up as necessary, then slowing down again as the system cools off.

However, I have yet to see the benefits of the claimed fan shut-off. As far as I can tell, the fan is always running, even when the computer is just sitting. The only difference is between the quieter mode and the truly noisy mode, when the load rises. But the fan never appears to be silent.

Hi guys. My problem has been satisfactorily resolved by Corsair's excellent customer support team. My replacement unit (much to my surprise) is the excellent AX1200i. It appears to be a refurb/previously RMA's unit, but it's working fine as far as I can tell. Certainly, there is zero fan noise from this unit.

The only caveat I might mention is a very slight coil whine, but it's absolutely minimal, and doesn't even come close to how appallingly annoying and loud the fan on the HX1050 could get.
