H80i Installation help

I'm having my motherboard replaced under warranty (new board, same model) so this will be like a fresh install. I decided to use this opportunity to overclock my CPU (been running it at stock speed with the stock cooler) and after reading positive reviews I purchased a Corsair H80i.

My case is a top mounted PSU so I can't use the big H100i and have to use the smaller H80i. Currently I have a CM Turbine Master Mach 1.8 acting as an exhaust (in the spot where the H80i fans and radiator would go) that works well with the 2ea 240mm intake fans on the side of the case that blow right on my two video cards.

I'm looking for advice on the fans placement. The instructions say for best performance I should position the fans to act as intake. My question is should I position the fans of the H80i as exhaust for my particular system? My concern is that if I don't I'll only have heavy intake but nothing to exhaust all the heat being generated in the case.

Here are my specs: (Except for the VGA and CPU I have added product links for each one to show pics)

Case: XCLIO Windtunnel

Motherboard: ASUS M4N98TD EVO

CPU: Phenom IIx6 1090T @3.2 (stock, I want to over clock this hence the new cooler..)

PSU: RAIDMAX RX-1200AE 1200W ATX12V

2ea EVGA GTX560Ti 2GB in SLI

Thanks in advance :)

You could try it both ways. However if you choose to install the fans as an exhaust your using warm case air to cool your CPU so your temps may be slightly higher and it won't cool as efficiently as it should

So even with 2ea, 240mm intake fans, by setting up the H80i fans as exhaust I'm still cooling the CPU with warm air? With 2 large fans pulling in cool air?

If your condition resembled my condition:

- Living in tropical country where it get realy hot.

- Don't have aircon in the room where your pc is in.

- Overclock to max stable daily OC.

Then do please use the H80i as intake.

But if your case ambience is good, your room temperature is good... and your OC is conservative, then it wouldn't make big difference if u use H80i as exhaust.

(use digital termometer to measure your case ambience and room ambience).

I live in North East United States and I have excellent room tempetures all year round (if anything it gets chilly in this room) but my concern is if I follow the instructions I will have 4 fans; 2ea 120mm (the H80i) and 2ea 240mm (side mounted case fans) filling my case with air, creating a big dust trap and nothing to exhaust.

I sent an email to the case mfgr to see if I can reverse the 2 big fans to act as exhaust and then I can set the H90i fans as intake which will blow cool air right on the radiator. However if it's all the same, then I'd rather not go through that and just install the H80i as exhaust if the 2 240's intake is enough

For your referrence...

Based on my experiment using the pc which had h80i with performance mode as intake fan in two different room:

My work corner:

-Didn't have aircon.

-Room ambience is 32'C using digital termo

CPU temp in corsairlink:

Idle 41'C

Load 2 hours of prime95 torture 55'C

Load when playing games 52-3'C

My bedroom:

-Have aircon.

-Room ambience is 18'C using digital termo

CPU temp in corsairlink:

Idle 33'C

Load 2 hours of prime95 torture 50'C

Load when playing games 39-40'C

As result of that experiment, I place my PC in my room and use long dvi cable + wireless keyboard n mice to work outside...

So, if your case ambience are around 30-33'C... Using your H80i as exhaust will, in my layman assumption, perform like using your H80i as intake in a typical room without aircon in a humid and hot tropical area.

Thanks for the replies, appreciate the help. I did some more reading and I'm confident the best bet (in my case) is to exhaust the h80i in order to maintain cool air flow throughout my case. If I intake it then I am basically turning my rig into a vacuum cleaner :(
