Older RAM Question

Antiquated

Recommended Posts

Recently I needed to upgrade this old machines RAM, and was unable to find any cmx1024-pc3200c2 (twinx) ram to match the set I am using. I was able to find a brand new set of twinx with the part number CMC2GX1M2A400C3.

The ram seems to run well together, passing Prime95, and Memtest+ with no issues.

The RAM has the same latency, voltage, SPD settings at 400mhz.

The machine seems to run great until I play games, run 3DMark, or use my surveillance software. (DirectX apps)

The system may run for several hours or just a few minutes before totally freezing.

So my question is, is it the fact that the ram is not matched, or is there possibly an issue with winxp 32bit handling 4GB of system ram and 2 vid cards with 512MB each? This is Windows XP 32bit SP3 - up to date.

It seems very weird that Prime95 and Memtest doent fail, but games do...

Any help would be appriciated, thanks.

It's a very good possibility that is your issue. I would try one set by itself, then the other to see if you get the same results.

Possible GPU issues?

I can run a single set without issue. 2gb at a time is no problem. Both sets perform as expected without a single issue.

I also went as far as removing 1 of the 9800 gtx+ cards from my system, Windows went from reporting 2.75gb to 3.00 gb. (I am fully aware of the limits of 32 bit memory address size.) Also tried Underclocking the ram to 166.5mhz.

Have had this system 10 years (except the vid cards, they are 2 years) and it has been virtually bulletproof.

Thanks for the reply

SOLVED!

In case any other users out there are still using this outdated equipment and experience this issue, I found this link dealing with socket 939 and 940 mainboards and the JEDEC specs for ram.

http://www.redhat.com/archives/amd64-list/2006-July/msg00001.html

Took a while to find this. After going and setting my RAM to 166 and setting latency manually, my system ran 36 hrs with my surveillance and prime95 both running.

My previous post I had said I dropped to 166 already, but I was actually on the 183mhz. my bad ;)
