Help me configure bios for Memtest

Hi,

Did a new build, everything brand new, but had many bsod and corrupted install files, so i decided to check my ram using memtest.

The four sticks show errors. i did switch slots, and tested them one by one, one of them got more than milllion error, and the others between 1-100 but those errors are pretty consistant when i switch slots )

So i wanted to know as the four sticks shows problem, if i could optimize my bios setting to know if it is a mobo problem or the ram, like tweaking voltage?

this is my specs :

errors show mostly on test 7 and 8, and some times in test 5.

Mobo : X79A-GD45 (8D)

Ram : 4X8 CML32GX3MA41866C10

cpu : i7-3930K

graphic card : 460 GTS

i did enable XMP profile in bios.

Best regars and thanks for any help.

Jey.

Ok seems that i forgot to check if my proc handles 1866, well it doesn't and can only handle 1600 max.

Should i test at 1600 mhz with different voltage and timings ( if yes can you point me to correct values ) ? or should i consider exchanging my ram for better result ?

Regards

Jey.

edit : did test with 1333mhz and 1600mhz values, still got errors, should i tweak timings when i donwgrade to those rates ?

any chance that i ve damage the cpu memory controller using 1866mhz ram and 1.6v for test ?

Correct, but you shouldbe able to run 1866mhz memory easily with that CPU. Really it should handle 2133mhz memory.

No, the memory can handle upwards of 2.0v before damaging the memory and at least 1.65v before you would damage the memory controller in your CPU. I have seen people use upwards of 1.75v depending on the overclock and cooling solution but I wouldn't advise anything higher than 1.65v. If all four sticks are showing errors then it really looks like the MB is the problem since they are all still doing that at default SPD of 1333mhz.

Have you ever updated the bIOS?

i ve updated the bios, same prob.

Some sticks shows no error when i use "windows memory diagnostic.

Should i try enable XMP profiles with dram frequency set at 1600mhz,

Should i tweak timing for better stability at 1600 ?

Mb problem should give me same errors from different stick ? because i have some that got millions and some very few... ( same kit ).

Absolutly! See what happens there first before adjusting anything else.

Right now i would say the number of errors is irrelevant for the time being. The fact that ALL the sticks are showing some errors more important. The memory is tested before it leaves the factory on a MB so to get a kit that has one bad stick is pretty rare, but to have an entire kit be bad is almost impossible.

No, there should be no need to.

Sorry to say, but i really think the board is bad and you should contact Gigabyte and run this past them.

You might even want to download and run Intels CPU diagnostic too to check out the CPU. It's a possibility the CPU is bad. It's a very slim possibility , but still ...

I did the intel cpu test, and it passed.

I m now running with one stick ( the one with the less errors) on the dimm1 and it is pretty stable, when i try to add more or switch the stick with an other one, it bsod a lot, and google chrome crashes often.

i ve read about compatibility issues when one stick at a time are fine but when pair added problems come...

maybe ?

( i try to find solutions as i i haven't an other computer to test the ram, or ram to test the mobo till next week ).

Not with a matched kit. If you are using single random sticks then that might be a possibility.

But i would take RamGuy up on his offer to replace the kit. But if you get a second kit that does the same thing then the MB is bad.

Hi again,

Well i ve tested a new set of ram sticks on the mobo, and ran memtest, gave me no error, and it's perfectly stable.

I ve also tested the ram on an other PC, two sticks gave me errors, and two gave me 0 error.

So it seems that the ram is the problem, still weird to have two problematic stick in a kit...what are the odds...

i'll submit a RMA.

Regards and thanks for helping,

Jey.
